I was a Army First Sergeant for 21 years. Over 100,000 mandays with part or all of unit Deployed.

I repeatedly told my Soldiers fired rounds are irrelevant until tbey are coming at you. Always be prepared.

A shootout is only successful when you can talk about it. If not, it was a failure.

I have talked with people about cc and the one thing I ask them , Can you kill him? If you hesitate on that answer, then you probaly don't need to carry a gun. I have heard people say they will scare them with it. No, that will get you killed. CC is a huge responsibility, but being mentaly prepared to protcet your life or your family is an important factor to consider. Once the trigger is pulled its a different ball game.:2cents:
That's part of why I don't carry. Mostly though, because I would'nt be sure if the situation warranted it until too late. (Also not a real big concern up here... yet)

I respect that and applaud your decision.

My wife and I have talked about it many times. She doesn't think she can pull the trigger. Then I don't want her carrying. All she'll do is get the gun taken away from her and used on her. She's better off just being a "Sheep" and hoping for the best.

If things changed up here, I would take some hands on training courses, we just don't have the need for it here.

I am curious though, why the officer in the link above switched from a .45 to a 9. It looks like a topic for an entirely new thread though.

Same here. I don't CC. I use the Sergeant Major's line in the movie We Were Soldiers. If I need a (gun) there will be plenty of them lying around. :)

I used a .45 in Vietnam. Carried it in addition to an M16. I considered it my last resort. Can't hit a bull in the butt with it. But if I get even close to you and you listen to that pumpkin whistle by it will cause you to take pause, that's my opportunity.

Carried a 9mm in Iraq, in addition to the M16. Wayyyy more accurate than the .45. More rounds. Lotsssssss less knock down power.

Ther are a number of reason that come to mind, one being that the 9mm is more accurate at 25yds+ than the 45. The 45 rounds drops like a rock at distance. The 9mm has better penatration than the 45( through doors , glass, body.etc...) Also many departments have full auto weapons on hand such as a H&K mp5 which is chambered in 9mm, so now your amo is interchangeable with that weapon. I don't know of any dept. personally that carries a 45, so once your out of ammo your out of luck...

Richard keep in mind you are referencing your military experience but the civilian experience and equipment is much different. The old 1911 .45 you carried in Viet Nam was likely an old WWII era pistol, and while those pistols were pretty functional, they sure lacked a lot in the accuracy department due to their extremely sloppy fit. A good Les Bair and many other custom .45's can print a 1 inch group at 50 yards. Even many of the newer off the rack guns can do 2 inches at 25 yards. So the design CAN be accurate, it just depends on how they are made. As for your Barretta, yes it was a more accurate gun out of the box in its military trim, and can be hand fitted for even more accuracy.

Now on to the modern ammo. Of course the military is ordinarily limited to FMJ ammo so if that is the way it has to be, I would rather have a 230 grain .451 bullet to fling at my enemies than a 115 grain .355 bullet. Hence the .45's reputation as a better manstopper by far.

But us civilians can have ammo not approved under the Geneva convention. And defensive ammo has all gotten better even in the last 10 years and is under constant development. While some might not agree, the 9MM with the proper ammo is an effective manstopper. In fact the FBI is now transitioning their agents back to the 9MM from the .40 S&W. This represents a full circle from the 9mm back in the 80's to the 10MM after the disastrous 1986 Miami shootout to the .40S&W when the 10MM proved too much for most agents to handle (the whole reason for the creation of the .40&W) and now back to the 9MM. Yes the new ammunition is that good.

The 9MM is now an effective manstopper with the right ammunition, offers much less recoil, meaning that follow up shots are much quicker, and carries more ammo in a given magazine size.

All good points.
