Don't make the mistake that just because we don't carry guns in Canada that we don't have them and know how to use them. The vast majority of the older generation up here grew up with firearms and were taught how to use them and respect them at a very early age, just like in the U.S. We simply don't have that basic amendment that states we are allowed to bear arms and as a result the cultural changes came about. With only one tenth of the population and ten times the space, we also have a highly visible and well equipped police force that is armed to the teeth. It's an entirely different world up here. One of our biggest concern with guns is when we travel south of the border, because it seems to be a really big deal for nearly everyone to carry a handgun down there, and handguns are basically useless for shooting anything other then people. "Guns" is also a very blanket description of firearms and tends to blur the facts and functional differences between long guns and hand guns. It also completely overlooks the reality that there are other deadly weapons such as knives and compound bows that can be equally deadly if not more deadly given a need to defend ones self and their loved ones. As weapons go, hand guns kinda suck in many respects and if you are ever likely to accidentally shoot yourself, it would probably be with a hand gun. I'm not looking to get into a debate here, just offering another way of looking at the situation. If you can't protect yourself with 16 shots from the 2 guns you are wearing, maybe it's time to start wearing a sword :|

When I travel north of the boarder from Wyoming into Canada, I have a concern about all the knives and crossbows you guys have up there. :) come on down and visit, we're not all packing and the ones who are packing aren't packing just to shoot someone.

You will have a better chance in getting mauled by a grizzly, gored by a buffalo, bit by a rattler, drug off by a mountain lion and last by not least, run over by a soccer mom texting while behind the wheel. It's not so bad down here.....

Smile............. yes but up here the worst that can happen when you give a driver the finger for cutting you off is getting the finger back, whereas down your way I imagine if someone is having a bad day already and then gets in a scuffle , there is a chance the concealed weapon comes out........nope I think I prefer to stay in Canada where it is hard to conceal that crossbow....smile!

People with concealed weapons permits do not shoot people for road rage insults. You dont have a clue what it is like to carry a concealed firearm. Not a clue. All you have are media fueled stereotypes. Because you live in another country, and have no frame of reference to base you opinion on, I can forgive your ignorance. But I will assure you that the weight of responsibility that comes with carrying a concealed weapon is huge. This rant is not meant as a personal attack, but a feeble attempt to educate you and others.

No worries ;) I travel to the USA plenty, Wyoming included. Wild animals don't worry me very much, but you are right about needing to watch out for the minivans and distracted drivers, those are deadly.

Agreed, my career was in law enforcement/criminal justice and my son is a LEO with a background as a firearms instructor. I know you are former LEO as well and the people who are going to shoot someone in a road rage incident or otherwise are not the ones who have a concealed carry permit.

Those who have no experience with lawful carrying of firearms and this is certainly not unique to Canadians always make the same bone headed assumptions. These prediction, as we both well remember, were made by many civilians, Police Chiefs and Prosecuting Attorneys when CCW was passed in Missouri. One must wonder if CCW resulted in rampant acts of violence why it is now legal in some form in all states with many being "shall issues" and not one state has repealed the CCW laws.

I do know of ONE incident where a PA CCW permit carrier did shoot another driver in a road rage incident.
There have been other road rage shootings, but the shooter did not possess a permit to carry.

Until about three years ago there wasn't a single reported crime in Kentucky by a CCW license holder. I haven't seen the recent figures but I can't imagine it has changed. People who go to that much trouble are not looking to commit a crime, they are looking to protect their families.

I think it was Ted Nugent that said, "an armed society is a polite society".

Back to the original thread, I am seriously thinking about getting a Hi-Point 9mm or 45 for a woods gun and a Rock Island 4" revolver for a stash it away home protection weapon. As I stated earlier in this thread I don't see there being many threats while out and about but the come home and somebody in the house threat is very real. Neither of those pistols are high quality target firearms but ten foot self defense weapons. Both have reputations of going bang every time the trigger is pulled.

And I can get both for less than $400! So if I loose either one off the tractor or cart in the middle of a sixty acre field I will not have lost much.

Now if I were going to clear a house of a Mexican drug gang I might want a $1500 hi capacity 45, but shooting a skunk, snake, or other varmint while walking around a pond is what I want it for.
