Movin South... Silly yankee questions...

My dad kept his hunting boots on the back porch. One time after a hunt my brother came up to me and said, dad had put on his boots and didn't know there was a mouse inside. I knew the rest. After the hunthe took off his boots to find a flat mouse.
I've read that water moccasins used to be a real danger to dogs and people in the Arkansas river bottoms. They're highly poisonous.
Luke's advise about the deep south heat is sound as well. The older and fatter I get the worse the heat becomes.

There used to be a Gulf gas station in Callahan, Florida, off I-95, just south of the Georgia border. It may still be there.

They had signs:

GAS

CLEAN RESTROOMS

WE FOLD MAPS

Even worse if you're a 'sweater' like me! No evaporative cooling it there's no evaporation. With 100% relative humidity, 80deg can be miserable. A breeze isn't cooling either.
On another note the 'cigars' (sp?), mosquitos, and brown recluse make live interesting too. Oh, and in many places the primary ground cover is poison ivy.
No snow though!

Let's define you moving south. La, Ms, aren't south, they are deep south. Big difference. You had better learn the lay of the land, before you put down some roots. Arkansas, on the other hand, is kinda south with a little Texas thrown in. I know real good people in all three states, but even they will tell you, as a New Yorker, you had better know your place. Respect for their Southern ways go a real long way...

Two of the best bumper stickers I ever saw dealt with people moving South but clinging to their Northern ways
1) I don't give a **** how they did it in New York
2) If you "Love New York" take I-95 north
I learned a few lessons as well about New Yorkers. The first thought of most of us in the South is NYC. Friends I met who had grown up on farms in western NY were pretty much southerners with funny accents and made it VERY clear right of the bat that they were NOT from NYC nor anything like the city folks. As for the heat, I'll take that over snow any time. I have yet to have to shovel any "heat" out of my drive way.

Bless your heart, you miss out on some awesome OPE.

One thing I've learned having lived in FL, GA, KY, MA, and NH and travelled the rest of the country. No matter where you go you will find what I call "Excessive pride of place."

Yall can have Chiggers. No Chamber of Commerce, ever, mentioned those....

I have lived in the 'deep south' all my life (55 years) and I can't see living anywhere else in the world. I'm about 50 miles from the Gulf coast. Yes, we have snakes, mosquitoes, hurricanes, brutal heat in the summer, but I still love it.

Until recently, with the drop in oil prices, we had a very good economy.

As far as nasty critters, I don't think you need to worry about that too much. I don't recall ever hearing of a pet getting bit by a snake or anything like that.
