FWIW...In my experience people from the south say "nu oarlens"...(they only say "new awlens" on TV etc.)
People from the north say "new orleeens"

BTW...the hominy based dish served at breakfast and with shrimp or fried fish in the south known as "grits"...is pronounced "gray-its"

Texas may be #26, but when you go west of the DFW metroplex you would swear you were out there by your self. One of my co-workers had a place out in SW Texas about 30 miles north of Del Rio. It was dirt cheap, but you had to drive for at least 1/2 and hour to get gas or groceries. I think Texas has tried to bunch everybody into 5-6 large areas and the rest is wide open.

I'm sorry but Y'all are confused! "North" is North Dakota, and "south" is of course, "SOUTH Dakota! I too have been all over this great nation and will agree with almost all the comments on here. Respect and lack of attitude has found me friendly people everywhere.

You do! Southern "English" is closer to Elizabethan English of the 17th century than what the modern Brits speak according to many linguists. Similar to the "odd" pronunciations of French in Quebec that are closer to how French was spoken in 17th century Paris than today.

The Southern states were settled primarily by English, Scots and Irish in colonial and pre Civil War days. They spoke Elizabethan English and had left England before the modern "Queen's English" became the standard there. Just imagine, Shakespeare probably sounded like the characters in Honey Boo Boo.

Interesting! So the English changed how they pronounce words after America became Colonized. Completely opposite of what I would have thought.

How about the Irish and Celts? Were they the same back in the olden days or have they changed?
