I need a bigger tractor and am currently in need of something capable of digging stumps. I think I would like a mid size hydrostatic Tractor, Loader, Backhoe. Something with a rear lift and PTO so I could take the backhoe off and use it as a farm tractor. I am thinking at least 40+ HP engine with 30+ PTO HP. Would prefer used around 20K in pricing or less. I have seen the John Deere 110 TLB that seems to fit the bill. Does anyone have experience with these or have any suggestions? Any used Kubota, Massey, or other brands that fit this category?

I don't think you will find a JD 110 for less than 20k that is not beat to **** and back. How big of stumps are you planning on digging out? A full size backhoe or large mini excavator is more suitable for that. A Kubota L45 is pretty equal to a JD 110. The Kubota M59 is a good bit stronger than the 110.

I realize my price range limits what I might find. That is why I'm seeking input.

Stumps vary in size. I rented a 7,000 lb excavator to see what I could do with that and it left something to be desired. After a few I just drove around the larger pine stumps.

I think I could aggravate most of my stumps out with a mid size backhoe and if I owned it I wouldn't be pressed for time. I could always dig around the biguns and just burn them in place.

Excavators are too popular and pricey for me and then when you are done with what they will do you still need a tractor. A TLB would be the most versatile option I think.

I think the cheapest TLB's under $20k are the Kubota BX25D-1, JD 1025R, and MF GC1720 if you plan to get new probably can do stumps under 12" with some time, experience, and ripper tooth. Most of the time that backhoe is $7-8k premium minimum. So if you want larger used might be the way to go something like Kubota B26 TLB with a few hundred hours. You got to pay to play unfortunately big toys are expensive. I also priced out a loaded Kubota 2601 TLB from Barlow's for about $26k new with 0%. All the larger TLB's in CUT form will be in $30k range for something not beat to ****.

A 7k excavator is similar to JD 27D mini excavator which is much stronger than a CUT backhoe. Something close to 5000 lbs. of digging force at the bucket. A Kubota Grand L6060 (60Hp tractor) with a BH92 backhoe only produces 4500 lbs of digging force at the bucket. Even less than 7000 lbs mini excavator.

I think renting out a job to a CAT or JD 60D excavator might be a better way for large stumps unless you want to grind them down and fill the hole every year for a decade.

The main reason I want to dig out the stumps is so I don't have the ever forming depressions and holes. Went through that with my 2 acre yard.

I have a couple of quotes on having the work done. One guy offered to dig out the stumps, rake the roots, and burn it all on 5 acres for $10,000. He wasn't planning to grade it out I don't think. I got another quote of $4500 per acre to do all that and level the ground out from an excavation company.

I'm not in a big hurry and I can't seem to come to terms with paying that much for having it done versus putting that cash into machinery and doing the work myself.

The excavator you rented has a arm digging force of 4589 pounds, bucket digging force of 6968 pounds, and lift capacity of 2537 pounds. The JD110 has a arm digging force of 3764 pounds, and a bucket force of 5723 pounds. If the excavator was a disappointment the JD 110 will be bigger disappointment.

I understand what you are saying. I have only about 2 acres of lawn on my 5 acre property and about 12 larger silver maple stumps I have to remove. I decided to go with a TLB like you but go with a smaller machine. It will take longer for sure but I can do it myself when I have time along with mowing, plowing, grading, etc... it's not the most efficent way to do it. But it is investing money into your own machine.

However, if you have 50 or more stumps. Then renting a bulldozer or a 30000 lbs excavator might be the way to go for a weekend. Get the job done and then just use a smaller CUT or SCUT or TLB to do the rest of the work you need to do.

A JD 110 will do a better job than a rear mounted "add on" backhoe on a similarly sized tractor. It will have a stronger loader as well.

Down side is that you cannot remove the loader like you can on most modern CUT's.

Like already mentioned, it seems like you would be disappointed by a BH this size IF you already weren't happy with a dedicated mini excavator of 7000 lbs.

Question is, how many stumps do you actually have, and how patient can you be while removing them a few at a time?

Renting a 30K excavator is on my list of options. Cost for that is about $2000 per week or a little more with delivery and rental protection.
