and get it in writing.. or if he's a bum, he will report it stolen... :(

Make a sales receipt w/ serial number and have him sign it. Just in case it's already stolen. :)

My in laws loaned us some money when we were first married so we would have a down payment to buy our first house. We paid it back. Every time we got an income tax return we paid them another chunk and they asked if we were sure we wanted to do that. I think it was around $1500.

I have helped my sister out a few times but she never asked for it. I knew she needed help. But I told her it was a gift. She had some temporary problems and is squared away now. Nothing she could have avoided. And she is very frugal.

I feel a bit silly to report back, I'm going out on a limb for him this once. I'm getting the gun, and my wife made payment to the utility, didn't give him cash or anything. There's a pretty good chance I'll regret it later, but I figure I'll give him a chance. If I don't get 100% of the money within two weeks, I'll let his butt starve next time. Maybe I can beat some sense into him, he needs it, and his 20 year old girl friend.

Worst case, I keep or sell the gun, but I don't really want it, wife's got the same identical pistol already

I'm probably a sucker but

I keep thinking me and wife need to sit the two of them down, and try to explain how money works, it doesn't expire at the end of the week.

Edit: I guess the reaction convinced me, I expected a story about "you can trust me", and he really said that's fine, I'll have your money in two weeks. So, hopefully

A promissory note would be in order if you decide to go the loan route, given the information you've shared about his past dealings with family and money. If it were me, I'd not do it. Just tell him you can't spare it.

It would be much better for him if he worked a part-time job at McDonald's or Walmart, say 15-20 hours per week, earn the money himself and hold his head up with some pride....

On another note, how many of you have worked multiple jobs in your life in order to pay your bills and get ahead? I know I have. And, as I recall, I was still having quite a bit of fun while doing it, too. I was tired, but I had a plan and was achieving my goals in a timely manner. It gave me a great sense of satisfaction.

Well, he's working 5 days at Sprallmart, and two or three afternoons washing dishes at a restaurant. I do partly feel for a young guy in the world now, but at the same time, he's got that typical entitled attitude. The world owes him a middle class income, even though he doesn't have a skill.

I worked 2 jobs for about 5 years when first married back in the early 70s.

I only worked one, but I worked 72 hours per week, on salary, a low salary; and stripped copper and scavenged aluminum soft and gutters, all to make a payment on a truck I couldn't afford, that Mom co-signed on, because I could drag her down with me.

I haven't thought about those early years in a while. They were pretty lean. We didn't have a stereo nor a color TV like most people we knew did. We did our best to make smart sensible decisions about money.
