Drone/Unmanned Aircraft Registration

Does registration cover the old Cox Model planes from the 1960's and newer?

We had a model airfield not far from here...

As a child I would beg for my parents to take me there on a Sunday afternoon.

It was adjacent to Oakland International and had string control and radio control area...

I was mesmerized by the work and detail that went into some of those multi engine models...

In highschool we had a model rocket club and the big thing was doing a launch and taking a single picture at altitude...

Makes perfect sense.

Ignore government satellites that can read your license plate from space, the cell phone which broadcasts your location to cell terminals and GPS and sends Metadata to the NSA, EZPass transponders that record the date and time you pass anyplace that has a receiver, web browsers that report your personal data to any website you visit, and debit and credit cards that give your personal data to every store you visit, and all the private and government security cameras you pass every day (some of which may be fixed on your property).

Instead, worry about an overgrown toy that has a maximum range of a mile or so, has a very limited field of view and no focus capability, and probably doesn't have any live feed.

You'd better get radar or a jammer because they are small, unobtrusive and usually sky-colored so if someone really wants to see something on your property, they're going to do it at dawn, out of the sun, or at least when no one is in view. In other words, your search for the guilty will likely punish the innocent.

You must have seen the cheap ones.. I know people that have them. Their drones, have very good live feed, very good field of view, and focus very well

OK ... gave one away for Christmas. Think I'll buy one for myself to stream live video of the farm property. I have ZERO plans to register.

Yeah, I have one, so I know exactly what they can do.

And if I intended to spy on someone, I'd fly it out of the sun or use terrain so you'd never see it, or simply put it near neighbors so that if you shot at the drone you'd be shooting at them.

But I don't do those things because I'm not in the habit of invading the privacy of neighbors, trigger-happy or not. Like about 99.9995% of other drone users.

But the government and big business is still spying on you. If you don't believe it check out the ads at the top of the page.

My first experience with Drones was 2003 in Iraq. It was Styrofoam, no landing gear, launched by a 3 man crew and large rubber band, caught on the run, if lucky, when trying to land. Look how fast this technology has evolved.

I am normally not a supporter of more governmental control. But in this case I am. FAA is WAYYYYYY behind on this.

I support a beginning of some sort of registration. What I REALLY support is electronic tracking of the Drone so in an instant the owner's identity can be revealed. Operator registration is the first step toward this. I'll stand on my word that in 5 years any Drone bought will be equipped with this type of identification. Registration of operators will be secondary.

Drones are not toys. If you think so you are behind the pack alongside FAA. :)

It is amazing every drone that has crashed and was investigated the gov was able to track down the owner. So why the need to register an item that has a serial number and recorded at time of sale? Just more control.

Correct. Something like a non modifiable MAC address "Black Box" recoverable chip that Is assigned and recorded when purchased would do the same as registration. Existing criminal laws updated for drones if needed should be enough. As for anyone that has a drone fly over and harass their livestock, a well aimed shotgun blast took care of my problem. Whoever was flying it is out $1500 or so and either hasn't had enough money to buy another one or Is flying it somewhere else. It has been a few months now without an issue and the heifers are settling down. I took the scrap to the Sheriff as requested. This is the same Sheriff that has us give him dog collars after we find and take care of nuisance dogs killing or harassing livestock. He visits the dog owners and explains they need to keep their dogs on their property. It has been 2 years since I had a dog problem. I understand the drone is in an evidence locker waiting for someone to report it lost or me. He said they are not going to try to track down the owner by a serial number unless they have more of this type of incident. Anyway, I'm happy, I do not have to repair any more fences nor did I have any animals break their leg. Not everyone has as understanding of a Sheriff and I did not need any special laws.

The larger problem will unfortunately be addressed when a drone takes out a plane engine or something of that magnitude and lives are lost. God forbid, but it will happen.

Or runs your heifers out into traffic, or distracts a driver on a major highway, or gets tangled up with a helicopter, or crashes into a crowd injuring or killing someone, or a multitude of other issues.

It's definitely going to happen. We need some sort of control in place reinforcing to the owner/operator that action will be taken. Right now, as you described in your issue, the owner is cowering at home hoping his doorbell doesn't ring. When firm control is in place doorbells will ring.
