James, whats EMP?

Oh, dear.. I could go for hours on that subject. :)

Cliff's notes version, Electro Magnetic Pulse.

Emitted from atomic weapons, and other specially designed weapons, and also, a bigger threat is natural EMP when a coronal mass ejection (CME from the sun) occurs, and the protons strike our ionosphere here on earth.. The largest one known to strike the earth was in 1859 called the Carrington event. It that happened now, we would be in the stone age. A large CME occurred in 2012, but it missed us. Barely. It is one of the TEOTWAWKI scenarios. TEOTWAWKI=The End Of The World As We Know It. that is also the chorus line of a popular pop song from many years ago. There is no point worrying a lot about this, it is what it is. There is more to know, but I said I would keep it short.:)

The cell network is just as vulnerable as the land line network, because it also uses the land line network. Cell towers are fed with either copper T1 lines or increasingly were possible with fiber bandwidth. But it is no more robust than the connected network feeding the towers. The MTSO's (Mobile Telephone Switching Office) are interfaced into the land line network also. It is all connected, and is all a part of the greater telecommunication network. Additionally of course the towers and radio's and feedlines offer additional vulnerability to weather events. And the towers have to have power, usually standard electrical service, battery backup and generators. Some may also have solar supplement, I am not sure on that. When the EMP comes, it is all going to be junk. Something to look forward to.:)
James, you explained it very well what I was talking about,thanks..

Are other phone companies like this?

Verizon sold their landlines in this area to Frontier several years ago. After every heavy rain there is no dial tone for 1-2 days followed by varying levels of static for 3-5 days. Have reported the problem to Frontier many times but it's never fixed. Unfortunately can't cancel because cell phone signal is 1 bar on a good day.

Oh Great..... I thought it was some new technology breakthrough to look forward to. Not so much...... :)

No, it is pretty much a "debbie downer". Nothing to worry about though... just follow the old nuclear war advice, put your head between your legs and kiss your xxx goodbye:thumbsup:

It's a favorite prepper worry thing.

If nukes go off you're going to have more to worry about than EMP. How much you are going to worry about a natural event that might occur every couple hundred years is your call....

Well, I've always said if I survive the initial event I think I can do fairly well at supporting myself on what's left. My main concern is all the City people that survive swarming out here to take what I have.

yep, but it isn't just the nukes..The nukes are probably low on the list of EMP possibilities.

Yeah, I'd agree.
