.. That pilot has to have the correct amount of air/fuel mixture to keep the pilot in contact with the T. couple.. When it doesn't have the correct amount of 02.. The pilot flame will try to find it. When it goes looking, it lifts off the T.couple and there is where the magic happens.. Everything goes out..
During this heating season, if you are using a gas appliance for heating..Please be safe,, every year I hear of several deaths due to CO poisoning .. Make sure your appliance is burning correctly,, If you don't know,, Have a pro check the appliance out... CO is called the silent killer for a reason,, It's colorless, odorless, And tasteless ... And your body won't reject it..
