Wouldn't a cup full be a huge amount? I was under the impression that the amounts of odorant put into gas was an extremely small amount.

Can't remember the amount injected. It certainly is very little but the pressure container has to be filled. Unfortunetly it's a job I have done.

The amount of H2S in propane is regulated, mandated etc. The real amount is dependant on the feedstock and processing procedures.

After H2S reaches a certain level it kills the sense of smell.

Uh --- hiding might get a little difficult!

If you were to accidently spill any on you. It would be impossible to hide
Some of the local gas company guys I work around sometimes told me what the injection rate was, but I can't remember.. They did tell my all they do is fill up a tank ,and set the rate on the automatic odorizer to inject xxx odorant to xxx CFH of gas ..

It is customary for the owner or operator of production, distribution, or bulk storage facilities in the U.S., to inject a minimum of 1.0 pounds (generally 1.5 lbs) of ethyl mercaptan per 10,000 gallons of liquid LP-Gas. NFPA 58 (which has been adopted administratively as law in most states) states:

During this heating season, if you are using a gas appliance for heating..Please be safe,, every year I hear of several deaths due to CO poisoning .. Make sure your appliance is burning correctly,, If you don't know,, Have a pro check the appliance out... CO is called the silent killer for a reason,, It's colorless, odorless, And tasteless ... And your body won't reject it..

The only reason my wife and I are alive is because I bought a CO detector and plugged it in for the heck of it. We came back from vacation late one night and turned the heat back up. The gas furnace had a lot of heating to do since the structure was quite cold. At about 3 AM we awoke to what I thought was a smoke detector. Tracked it down to the CO detector reading alarm. At 3 AM I am picking at the battery cover..... But then I decided to step outside with it. It went back to Normal ! Back inside with it, went into alarm. I did this a few times, then got the wife and dogs outside. Wife was rummy as were the dogs. Carried the CO detector into the basement, the detector shot up to lethal levels! Holding my breath, I turned off the gas, opened the doors and turned on all the exhaust fans in the house

Turns out the furnace, which was only about 5 years old, had been made in china to a lesser spec and was involved in a law suit we were not made aware of. The installer may have, but we were not made aware. The exchanger rusted through and was pouring huge amounts of CO up the exhaust vent. Coincidently, the installer had drilled a few small holes in the stack (to test I assume). Those holes were pumping the CO into the basement itself.

The exchanger was replaced free to me and I put screws in all the test holes. AND, now I have 3 CO detectors.

I guess I should be dead already......

Folks all around my childhood home used wood heat; based on their age was just how hot it would be! I can remember walking in one of our neighbors home and smelling tobacco drying out from within their spittoons- The heat was unbearable within that uninsulated house. Everyone chewed tobacco, "even the Ladies". Didn't occur to me that the smell of the tobacco that lingered in the air was saliva evaporating from within the spatoons because there was no humidity inside. Yes these were (old folks).....Good people.

Other neighbor was also elderly, and had the plumbing to the home was cool as all get out! They used a spring basin with stacked rock as a holding tank in the ground, then a submersible pump set inside to feed water to the house. They went from and old oil fed heater to a new gas heater

They never had any trouble and lived good long lives.

My In-laws use this type heater

So far every Christmas when we visit, I feel nor see any "moisture" in the air. Guess I am unaware of the hazards that seem to be lurking out there.... Now where did I leave my tobacco?

Cliff here, Moisture or water vapor is one of the products of the combustion process (see my post on the chemical reaction posted earlier) So yes water is being put into the air along with carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is the same stuff that makes the bubbles in you soda pop. Some water vapor in the air during the winter when humidity levels are naturally low is not always a bad thing. You may notice some extra sweating of cold windows as the water vapor condenses on them. Now I have to get going and get the mail delivered. :D

And remember - a great mitigating factor with the water vapor from using a ventless gas stove for heating is that the outside air is often DRY.

Today's tighter construction also traps in much of what used to be vented through all the leaks in the doors, windows, etc.
