You will have fire , police ,and gas companies running everywhere. Then when they found you are the cause , you may want to run hide somewhere !

Wouldn't a cup full be a huge amount? I was under the impression that the amounts of odorant put into gas was an extremely small amount.

I've been following this thread because I would like a bit of extra heat in the evening without upping the furnace thermostat. A nice flame is also enjoyable to watch. It sounds like for the maybe 2 hours a night it would run, the ventless would be fine in my house that could use some extra humidity. I really don't want to make a hole in my outside wall, that's much of the reason I haven't installed anything. If a ventless is light enough to store for the warm months then even better.

Good explanation,, Better than I could explain it.:D.. That pilot has to have the correct amount of air/fuel mixture to keep the pilot in contact with the T. couple.. When it doesn't have the correct amount of 02.. The pilot flame will try to find it. When it goes looking, it lifts off the T.couple and there is where the magic happens.. Everything goes out..

During this heating season, if you are using a gas appliance for heating..Please be safe,, every year I hear of several deaths due to CO poisoning .. Make sure your appliance is burning correctly,, If you don't know,, Have a pro check the appliance out... CO is called the silent killer for a reason,, It's colorless, odorless, And tasteless ... And your body won't reject it..
AND GET A CO DETECTOR!

However there is sulfur in propane. Just minute amounts.
from EPA
About 1 Pound per Billion Btu of Energy - from here.

Bottom line is that natural gas is about the cleanest form of energy from organic sources. Though SWMBO does not like my natural gas produced after a pot of beans.

Your reaction is correct if one is burning pure methane of propane. BUT, all purchased methane or propane is odorized as a safety measure. Methyl or Ethyl Mercaptan is added, and this does contain sulfur and gives the typical gas leak smell.

Burning the mercaptan does produce sulfur oxides.

I would not long-term use a non-vented gas or propane heater. Both because of the sulfur, and because of the water vapor introduced which makes everything humid and rusts my tools. I know people do it all the time, but there is a non-zero safety issue. Why take a chance. A vented one costs a little more, but how much is your life worth?
Good point, brought up way back.

About 15 or so years ago the town of Tishomingo, MS took over the local natural gas distribution. Not noted for their technical expertise some doofus put in over 10 times the amount of Mercaptan. The town sits in a topographic bowl. For a long time (week?) driving into is smelled like a kitchen with the gas left on not burning.
The entire town smaelled like if you lit a match it would explode.

Looking for a house to buy in TN a couple years ago, I ran into a house with probably 8 wall mounted gas heaters and each one was probably 40,ooo BTU. I didn't get the place and assume they used them in whatever room they occupied the most at the time. As long as one was only on a few hours in the evening while watching TV or just to take the chill out of the air, I think they are a good idea.

I had a vent free fireplace in our house that I used for 1 winter but pulled it out and put a wood burner FP in it's place. But I never noticed any side effects or moisture problems and we ran it maybe 3-4 hours a day.
