Are LED Light Bulbs a Fire Risk

Walmart recently had 60 and 40 W equivalent non dimable LED bulbs for $0.44 each. Yes, two for a buck and you got change back after taxes. I bought some to try out. They have a high temperature plastic base rather than the more ceramic type base you usually see. I have them above the kitchen table where the lamps point up and are open. I occasionally reach in and feel the base and they are warm but not hot. Visual inspection of the base indicates the plastic to look new (no discoloration). I also put them in a few can lights intended for a much larger flood style lamp with plenty of space. That room is dark with the lights off so we never really see the ugly inside of the fixture around the bulb. I've only had them a few months but so far so good. I did put one in an enclosed fixture but it is in the pantry so, unless someone leaves the light on, it is only on for a moment while we grab something.

I also had two 4' fluorescent tube fixtures, one in the laundry room and one under a kitchen cabinet with ballast problems. I wanted to keep the "long" light output but did not want to buy a new ballast and keep dealing with the delays, flickering, etc of a fluorescent tube. I also did not want to patch and paint the holes in the laundry room if I put up different fixtures. They now make LED tubes that use the 2 pins at each end to hold the tube. The tube has a 4' pigtail that you wire straight to 120 V and ditch the ballast. I had to create a spot for the cord to get to the old ballast compartment so I just used a pliers to put a nice radius on the divider. I believe they make LED tubes that use the ballast but that kind of defeats the purpose since ballasts use power and go bad. On the laundry room I only put one tube in instead of two and it is plenty bright. Looks kinda funny but it is the laundry room.

I got mine at a local mom and pop hardware store. Check around, you will find them. One important point, the pins on mine were fixed and can be 90 degrees out of where you want them, depending on the fixture. I think some may be adjustable. Make sure you get the ones you want, for ballast or not for ballast. I have another 32" in the kitchen I am going to replace some day. It is hard to beat a tube light for under counter lighting. The LED tubes are directional so the pin orientation is important. I think mine were 4700K which I am liking. I am not crazy about the yellow incandescent look.

I also put up a couple of LED flood lights. I wanted one spotlight and one flood, but could not find a lamp with a beam narrow enough for a spotlight in the local stores. They are plenty bright and I now don't worry like I used to about the power consumption if I leave them on. I think they were 150W? equivalent

I've bought several from Amazon. One set is fed from one end and requires removal of the ballast as well as a non shunted tombstone. The others are fed from both ends and you can leave the ballast in place if you wish.

One set of three fixtures had noisy ballasts, so using the tubes with no ballasts was the way to go for those applications.

Some makers have various color temperatures available so you can choose your favorite.

4-Pack of Hyperikon® Hybrid T8/T10/T12, 4ft LED Light Tube, Dual-End Powered, Works with and without ballast, 18W (40W equivalent), 2200 Lumens, 5000K (Crystal White Glow), Clear Cover, DLC-qualified - - Amazon.com

On those it looks like they power through the tombstone pins. I agree getting rid of the ballasts makes the most sense, particularly if the LED itself then draws more current, plus the ballast is as well.

Not sure I already mentioned this in this thread but you can buy LED 4ft twin bulbs in fixture for the same price as two bulbs only, at Costco. What I did.... I bought at $30 and I think they are down to $25 now. I have a few extra old fluorescent fixtures to give away but I didn't have to mess with the ballasts or compatibility, and my new LEDs are making smile every time I turn them on in my garage/shop. Highly recommend.

I got one pack of the Costco light as a test. They are a huge improvement. Just ordered another 10 packages. Will spread them around garage and shop then see if I need more. Am also going to get some of the bulbs that fit into existing fixtures for our kitchen.
