Engaging 4WD on Ford/New Holland 2120

I can't get the 4wd to stay engaged on my 1995 2120, unless I hold the the lever down with my foot. Am I doing something wrong? Something need to be lubed or iced up?

Are you talking about the diff lock or the 4wd? On my 2120 the 4wd lever is up for 4wd, not down.

Diff lock is on the right, yes it must be held down.

Ed L is correct. The diff lock may stay engaged after you release your foot from the pedal if the rear wheels are turning at different speeds. It will release once you're going straight again.

The OP may be confused about the two controls.
He was enquiring about engaging the 4WD, not the differential lock.
He may be pushing down on the diff lock, thinking it will engage 4WD.
As jimmysisson noted: The 4WD is only engaged by pulling the 4WD T-handle UP.

Why do you need your diff lock engaged for long periods?
I use mine when pushing into a pile of material. Once the bucket is full and I reverse it disengages. I also use it to get better traction in soft, soupy ground.

That is how it works. As soon as you push down it engages. Lift your foot off it disconnects.

That is a crappy design. So you if you are or on mud or ice you must keep your foot on it the whole time. I would have expected it to stay locked until released.

Anyone ever modified it to stay locked? Maybe something as simple as tieing it down when needed. Any negatives to this?

Are you confusing the differential lock with 4WD? I'm asking since your thread is titled "Engaging 4WD...". 4WD stays engaged until you move the 4WD lever to disengage it. Differential lock will cause binding while turning, and is typically only used sparingly so that pedal has to be held in place to keep it engaged. Your set up is typical of many (most?) tractors.
