Sandy soil, the R4s are going to give you better traction and flotation.

Not sure about this. R1s will give you better traction on everything but concrete.

I'm guessing not too much concrete he needs to care about on his 40 acres.

we have a case 580 bakhoe how i wish that thing had r1s.

i have bought lots of things from ritchie brothers. it is a good idea to go a couple days early and register and take your time going over whatever you are interested in. sometimes there are great deals sometimes well used equipment sells for like new prices. ritchie brothers get paid by both the buyer and seller, i feel sometimes they won't tell the whole story, but that's just my opinion. definitely take someone whose opinion you trust if you don't feel comfortable

Tell that to the billions of Case Backhoe owners
I'm talking about tillage work friend, and comparing a 10k lb backhoe to a 5k lb compact tractor is silly.

I am gong to have to disagree, dig you a big hole in a hurry in sand, no doubt about it.;)

You made a blanket statement that is simply false, lick your wounds and get over it:drink:

Well, we're certainly both entitled to our own opinions. If I need flotation, I'll drive the tractor with R4s. If I need traction, I'll drive the one with R1s. I'll pick this arrangement everywhere but on a slab. If the sand is wet, I'm not going to drive a tractor on it.

I'm not licking anything I still stand by my opinion R1s are going to give better traction. R4s are a compromise tire at best that's my opinion you have yours enough said about it.

Well, these guys are right. R4s aren't a compromise if you're working on concrete or asphalt. They are the tire of choice, because they have more area in contact with the ground and a much more puncture resistant. You're certainly entitled to your opinion, but saying that R1s are the only option to do serious work is definitely going to get push back.

I will concede that on asphalt and concrete R4s are the way to go but the OP is taking about woodland maintenence not construction work.
