Yeah, I hear you guys, always looking for ways to get more for less. Deerherd, you bring up a point I have been pondering too and that is adding the hydraulic TNT kit and just going with the manual rippers. I also need a disk, chain harrow and cultipacker for food plots and dove field in the next couple of years. I am not in a big hurry since it will be a bit before I retire and can spend more than just a couple weeks a year working on my property. The BB would be put to good use if I had it now but I have lots to keep me busy with mowing and controlling the invasives for now. I might hold off until I can see the EA Land Shark. Maybe I can sell one of my boats to get the extra cash to buy everything I want in a BB. Probably gonna be too busy playing in the dirt to fish anyhow.

Ted , will the Land Shark units have the rippers mounted like your extreme duty BB or will they mount through the cross member? I ask because just this morning I was looking at a used BB on Tractorhouse and I could see the welds where the ripper had torn through the square tubing. I'm just not thrilled about that setup because of the big rocks I know I will encounter when ripping.

The shanks will most likely be routed through the cross member for design reasons, but reinforcements will be made so tearing will not be a concern.

Our Category 1 30-70 Box blade has shanks that are routed through the tube, so we added a U shaped plate of steel behind every shank to prevent bending/tearing. 0 reports of damage!
Our current heavier models have shanks that are mounted behind the tube.

In my uneducated opinion thru the beam is the way to go.

A lot depends on your soil conditions. My ground is always wet and for all but about two weeks a year I can dig anywhere without rippers. If I lived in a dryer area like Brian I would have sprung for the hydraulic version no question. But for me it didn't make sense because for the money I saved and what little I actually need the rippers.

IIRC an additional $300 over the Gannon blade with hydraulic rippers got me the EA box blade with manual rippers, a Woods 96" land plane and TNT from Fit Rite. For my property it was a much better use of my cash.

Always need to take what your actual needs are into consideration. If a person has ground that typically doesn't need loosened up to be worked, then the capability to do so falls much lower on the need to be able to scale.

With the rocks and clay soils I have which set up like concrete in the summers I will need rippers just about any time I want to move dirt. That's why hydraulic rippers get my attention.

Then do not hesitate, if you don't get the hyd rippers, you will forever regret it. Double check with ETA and see if you can pin them down on design type and a ship date. I would think that they would be at least $500 less than a Gannon?

You can always get a Gannon and not wait.

Ted, That mounting system looks much better than the one I saw on Tractorhouse.

Last night I watched a youtube video of a guy using a Frontier BB with hydraulic rippers. He was working up some recently cleared ground and was hitting stumps and some rocks. Most of his rippers were bent and twisted. It was behind a Kioti 6010. He mentioned the rippers were about $60 apiece to replace so he was going to look for a press to try and straighten them. Always something to tear up when working rough ground I guess.

Brian, I have lots of time and can be patient when I need to be. It took me two and a half years of shopping around before I pulled the trigger on my Kubota 8200. Like I said, lots to keep me busy in the small amount of time I am able to get over to Illinois right now. Besides, the bass in my lake need some exercise once in a while too. ;-)

Jim, if you watch that video , Eric can and does tear up about everything that he uses. (almost brags about it in several of his TBN posts:confused2:) When things are clearly abused, just about anything can be damaged or ruined. In my opinion, Eric was operating far to fast of a speed for what he was doing.

Just my :2cents:

Just a thought ... Could the rippers be mounted in a fashion that they have a shear pin? I made a subsoiler in that fashion ... kinda think maybe it would be an idea for a box blade??

I later sleeved and used a smaller bolt for the shear action ... works good and I've not busted up anything but a couple shear pins

I recently bought a heavy duty box blade. I priced the EA models, Gannon, and a Bison. On a cost per pound basis the Bison was a much better deal than the others. I got this one for $3,100.
84" Bison 3-Point Industrial Hydraulic Box Scraper Model BB210-1

It's amazing how much better these HD models work and the hydraulic rippers are fantastic.

If you search box blades on tractor house you can occasionally find a good deal on somethign similar.
