Agree that brake pinion shaft on one side is broken. Happened to me first year I owned my JD 650. The clutch is another problem. The pinion shaft is not difficult to replace other than labor if you can get the part.

And just so I know...what is the name of part #9?

I believe it is called the final pinion. And no, I don't think it will just pull out after removing the brake drum, that is unless it is broke in half. What manuals do you have access too? Sending you a pm.

I had to remove the final drive on the broken side, the pinion shaft is part of the spur gear assembly. Will need gasket for final, the shaft, the lock rings and definitely get brake cover gaskets (yuk). I will help a little if you freeze the new shaft and modestly heat the bearings when reassembling. Eat your Wheaties, that final drive casting is pretty heavy.

Ok, call me stupid but I am not smart enough to get the brake drum off to check the pinion shaft. The manual says to flatten the washer, which I did and believe that it is #2. It was raised up on one side and I did flatten it out. The next thing the manual said to do was remove the "cap screw"....there is no cap screw. I am assuming that #1 is the end of the pinion shaft. When I turn it, the axle turns so I don't think it is a cap of any sort. I tried to loosen #4 by tapping a screwdriver with a hammer and no luck. Can't tell if #3 and #4 are separate pieces or both part of the drum.....

Underneath of what I think is the flat washer are 2 holes on the sides. It appears there is a cotter pin going through the shaft but it does not look to me like I can get that off until I can get both the flat washer #2 and #4 off.

This can't be rocket science, what am I missing? Could not get the picture to post for some reason so this link should open it up.

Have you taken the bolt out ?? Hope it don't break off.. That thing is pretty rusty.. After you get the bolt out.. The drum is probably going to be rusted to the shaft

Not to sound ignorant yet again..but is the bolt you are referring to #1 in the picture? Or is that the end of the shaft?

If that is the bolt, the brake drum just spins when I try to turn it...advice on how to keep the drum from spinning to get the bolt off?

I probably don't know what I am talking about but I doubt you are going to be able to see anything once you get the drum off. Is your axle housing built like the one shown on figure 57 in the 276 parts manual? Reference #2?

If you want to proceed in taking the drum off you might try putting c-clamps 180 degress apart clamping the drum to the housing. Impact would no doubt the the best. You can hold the drum with your hand using an impact.

That lightning video is scary.
