I used pavers to border my gravel.

Building my house, I will do a concrete pad near the garage, however I dont want to pay to concrete or pave the long driveway I will have.

Other than the obvious gravel, what options for a driveway do I have? I would like to put some sort of border in place to keep the driveway located, maybe railroad ties or similar? My main concern with the driveway is aesthetics, followed by dust. I want it to look good, and be dust free for the most part.

What have you done? Pictures?

Gravel works fine, IF it's installed properly. The driveway at my ranch is 20 ft wide x 330 ft long and 6" thick. Three 2" thick layers of crusher run, each layer watered and compacted with a vibratory roller). The area was excavated before laying the gravel.

No maintenance required during the 10 years I owned that ranch.

That grey colored gravel looks a lot better than concrete or asphalt, IMHO.

Good luck

+1 on asphalt millings if just topping a built up/crowned base.

Nice drive/look, flusher! Just the way I like it.

Looking to get ~40 yd crusher run (IMO, the best o'all) just to layer/top ~550' now that my crown/base has settled thru' two Winters. Layers already built up from gravel pit past 'til 25 yrs ago. Good drainage year 'round and ready to finesse. Only have to 'drag' thru the summer to 're-mix' textures and level potholes with a uniform 'blend'.

Edging curbs, etc can be laborsome. :scratchchin: A few stakes and string lines can make maint w/glypho look quite tidy. Scoot a tarp's edge along the lines as you go to shield lawn from over-spray. If it snows deep enough to plow there wouldn't be much curb or border to tear up. Same if guests get sloppy drive off edges in muddy weather or when light snowfall disguises thawed borders/surroundings.

Pricing the options could be a factor if that matters while you're still building the house, the cheaper ones allowing more 'do-over' choices later on. :)

Good luck

That's a nice looking driveway, and more practical than a 10' wide bicycle trail that some country homes call a driveway.

Did you go 20 feet wide so you could have vehicles going in both direction? How tight is it when that happens?

Remove the topsoil down 12 inches.
Put down geo-fabric.
Fill with crusher run.

Not really. Just thought 10 ft is too narrow, 15 ft is marginal, so I ended up with 20 ft wide. That driveway in proportion to the house and carport looks right to me--not to narrow, not too wide. Like Goldilocks:eek:
