What loader do you have on the M8540? Curious how much stronger it is than the LA854. I'm sure quite a bit so I'm curious as to how well this will work.

Our M8540 has an LA1353 the 5740 has an 854.

Looks like that loader is quite a bit stronger than ours. Lifts 20% more weight to 31" higher

I think you will get a LOT of use out of that tool!!!! Almost as handy as a Grapple.

I question the framework being strong enough. If used hard I believe the swinging jaw will very soon not align with the stationary jaw. If so, then it will lose the shearing ability. On your tractor it may hold up very well. Sure hope so.

In regards to shearing, with small trees you will have to develop a "soft" touch if wanting to pull a tree. Clamp too hard and it is going to shear it. This talent will probably develop with use. Mine doesn't overlap and I still sometimes grip a small tree too firmly and crush it to the point it pulls in two before the stump and roots are dislodged from the ground.

Bill, not familiar with what tree species you are pulling?? With your tractor and a puller you'll be equipped to handle some fairly good sized trees, again depending on type. The height of the tree isn't as important as it's age and stump diameter. These two things will indicate how much root growth you are dealing with.

I can pull Cedar trees with a 6" stump diameter if the soil is right. I can't pull an Oak tree with a 3" stump diameter anytime.

I've inspected his puller/shear and the framework is surprisingly thick and looks to be very strong. We both got the impression that the tractor will break or bend before the tool does!

Oak, ash, and maple. 3-4" tree is 20' tall, 5-6" tree is probably 30' It is really dense in the area and they have to grow tall in order to get any light. I am clearing a bit more each year, eventually I will put a pond in that area.

If possible I'd like to pull them instead of shearing so I don't have all the stumps. Having the option to do either would be nice though.

Bill, I fear that your tractor (similar loader strength to mine) won't be strong enough to pull out much bigger than 3" hard-woods with a puller.
