Ok, I got about an hour last night to work on it before a meeting. Got in a hurry and broke a bolt off...more on that one later. :)

Tonight I did manage to finally get to the problem. The suspected shaft was broken. You can see where it broke off in the pictures here. The other end of it is still in the PTO housing, have a question on it before taking out.

This first picture is taken from the left side and is the plate behind the brake drum. The hole is where the assembly containing the broken gear came out of. You can see the end of the broken shaft in there....now how to get out?

This pic is from the back into the PTO housing. You can see just to the left of the main ring gear the silver round part. I believe this needs to come out as it has a bearing inside of it, some clamp like things that I have no clue what the name actually is as well as the rest of the broken shaft. This is the side view of the previous picture. How does a person get this out?

I never thought I could have done this.....thanks to the advice on here, Aaron at Hoye, and my service manual....now hopefully Aaron will have all the parts I need. I am going to fix up all the little things that have gone bad or stopped working over the last few years. Probably will have some questions on getting it back together but it should not be too bad hopefully.

Basing my suggestions on 276 part drawings and your pictures. Pry the oil seal out of the housing shown here. I don't think you will find an external snap ring behind it. I think bearing, shaft and all should then press out going toward the brake drum. make sense?

The broken piece left in the ring gear might just push out if you can get a pry on the shaft inside the differential. The internal gear is splined on it and I don't think it has any kind of keeper. the gear will not go back through the ring gear, only the shaft. This may not work, if not, you may have to unbolt the ring gear or completely take out the differential housing.

I have been following this thread and just wanted to ad my 2 cents worth. I've been trying to figure out what would have caused that shaft to break. I would not want to do all that work just to have it break again.

Winston....I'll give that a shot tonight.

R Barger..... You are not the only one who is wondering that. I am going to ask Aaron when I talk to him, but I did find a thread on Hoye's message board where Aaron stated that the # cause of "tractor won't move" is this part. Now my theory is s total guess but I would bet it has something to do with engaging the differential pedal. I'll post what his theory is when I get it.

One reason to break is if you turn the tractor with the diff lock engaged.

I think I understand that correctly. In the below picture, #3 is the remainder of the shaft that is still inside the PTO housing. #1 for lack of a better term is the outer silver carrier, #2 is the bearing, #4 and #5 I have no idea what they are called. But am I understanding that the ONLY part that I need to get out of there is #3? I don't understand what you mean by "the internal gear is splined on it" .. sorry, I'm not up on the terminology needed here. lol #4 and #5 appear to be on there pretty tight, if I get that out and those in fact do stay where they are I bet it is interesting getting this back in...any advice appreciated on what to take out and how to take it out. I think I can get the part that came out taken apart easily enough but this one concerns me.

Aaron has one but it is in a perfectly fine rear end so it would cost me as he would have to take it out and then part out the rest of the rear end. Anybody know of another source for a brake axle stub?

What the heck are #4, and 5? Could #4 be a screwed-in collar that needs a unique wrench to remove?

Just looking at it I imagine #5 is several segments that tighten down on the splined shaft when #4 is threaded in, similar to a drillpress chuck. Is that anywhere near possible??
