My new 4520R was delivered today along with some implements. I am so excited! :cool2: Now, for my first question (of many, I'm sure).

I have looked for an answer but can't find the info I'm looking for, if there's a thread existing, please let me know.

I think I've figured out how to remove the backhoe and subframe, stretch the hoe out and lower the feet, pull two pins in the front, block up the assembly, move forward a little, disconnect the hydraulics, done.

Is that about right? What about the "blocking" mentioned in the owner's manual? Are timber pilings fine? Where, exactly, should I brace? Under the main frame and also in the front of the subframe?

Any other secrets, tips or photos you can share?

Thanks! I need to get the hoe off so I can dig some post holes!

Congrats on the new 4520R. I have about 15 hours on mine at the moment and I am happy so far.

I can't help with the backhoe question due to not having one but if there is anything else that I may be able to help with don't hesitate.

I block my bh80x under the main frame and the subframe end as well. Keep it all out of the dirt. I use the hoe and the stabilizer pads to drop down onto the blocks. Taking it off is a breeze compared to putting it back on. Don't forget to shut off the tractor and jiggle all the hydros to relieve pressure before disconnecting hydro lines.

After setting the brake, I stretch out the hoe to balance the sub-frame to relieve any pressure on the lower hooks and remove the pins (this forces the sub-frame upwards). With the engine off, brake on, the hooks can be spun with a finger, but you might want to use a stick for safety. I use the hydraulics to maneuver and line up the sub-frame left and right when installing it. The only place I block is the lower frame between the pads; over time the cyl's leak and the unit could tip left or right. I do not block the end of the sub-frame (stays on ground) because I need the clearance. Jiggling the controls of the hoe helps relieve the pressure on the lines when you disconnect them after you stop the engine. Do not forget to connect the tractor's looped line after you disconnect the hoe and before you start the engine.

Thanks for the reply. I took mine off without too much trouble. I'm sure reinstallation will be more challenging. I'll keep you posted.

Moved several tons of gravel today with the FEL. What a joy!

I was looking at taking mine on and off to learn how to do it. Is it really as simple as two pins up front and using the stabilizers? Then just unplug lines (after relieving pressure). It looks to be five minute job...am I over simplifying? Missing something?

You're not oversimplifying it. It's just about that easy. When I remove mine again, I will put some blocking under the main portion (directly below the part where the chair is) for safety and in case the stabilizers lose pressure over time, which would cause tipping. Follow Zork's steps above and it should be easy.

It is really that easy. My property is not level and my problem, which isn't very big, is getting the tractor aligned when I reinstall, it usually takes me about five minutes. Since I do not have concrete or asphalt to store my hoe on sometimes the X-Y axis do not match up properly.
I get the tractor as close as possible in low-low, shut off and connect the hydraulic lines, and sometimes it goes right in with only adjusting the pad height (from the tractor’s driver’s seat) when backing up into the hooks.

Zork,

I am trying to reconnect my hoe for the first time. I cannot get the hydraulic connections to make up. Feels like the hoe has hydraulic pressure in the lines but I cannot seem to release it. It is sitting on the stabilizers but no blocking. Do I need to get a jack to release pressure on the lines or what?

Thank you!

First, my tractor engine must be off. You could try moving all the other controls, not the stabilizers, to see if that releases pressure. If not, take a rubber mallet and gently strike the male fitting from the hoe to open the ball/check, then try it.
