I got it. The female connector on the hoe just wouldn't open no matter what. I finally jacked the hoe up, stuck it on the tractor, spun the female fitting off to relieve pressure, connected it up depressurized about 20 times, reinstalled it and everything is good now.

Thank you for your help.

One question. If one side of the hydraulic system on the hoe is depressurized and you wiggle all the controls and nothing moves, shouldn't the other side also be depressurized assuming the hoe is disconnected from the tractor?

I answered my question. Both sides need to be depressurized individually. I'll need to be more careful about blocking next time!

I am glad you got it straightened out.

Here is something that will catch most people out. Temperature. Uncouple the hydraulics (grapple/loader/backhoe) in cool morning, go to recouple in warm/hot afternoon, and find locked couplings. AND you know you depreassurised before uncoupling. The temperature increase have warmed and expanded the oil and locked the coupling. Generally need to get spanners and loosen fitting to "unlock" the coupling.pita.

Exactly. I have a skid-steer and change implements a lot and it is hot here in CA. I made a device to couple the ends of the disconnected implement together that has a bleed off valve between two quick connects. I crack the valve and relieve any pressure from the lines of the "parked" implement, then disconnect the device and I am good to go. But that is a little costly, as you need to buy a couple quick connects and a valve. But that way I don't have to loosen fittings to bleed off pressure.

As a dealer, we always remove and install the backhoe for the customer on delivery. That way they see it done once and even if they do not remove it for a few months, they have a general recollection. I'd suggest anyone buying a backhoe to have that demonstrated at the dealership or upon delivery. The good thing about that is that if the dealer knows he has to show you how easy it is to remove, he will darn sure make sure all the pins are lined up nicely and do not require a hammer to remove or replace.

Dave, you are right. (Sometimes) I have to use a hammer to tap the front of the sub-frame and it pops right into place. I do use a tool to swing the hooks out of the way because I do not want my fingers or hands anywhere near them when unhooking- even though the frame should be in an upward motion/pressure at that point.

Thanks, Dave. I'm going to build a tee connection with a male on one end, female on the other and a valve in-between and install it on the hoe when it's off the tractor. I'm not going to wrestle with that mess again.

I used high pressure fittings and a 5000 psi needle valve...then thought of the real application, it could probably be made of schedule 40 plastic and a ball valve!

Well, I wasn't going to use plastic, but it sure won't be rated for full hydraulic system pressure. Perhaps a little relief valve would be best.
