Is there something wrong with me?

We live on 5 very thickly wooded acres and the house is about 375' back from the road. You can't really see the house from the road due to the trees and brush. There is a "No Trespassing" sign about 50' in from the end of the driveway.

Around 12:30 Saturday night, sweetie had fallen asleep on the couch and I was about half-awake watching SNL (which I haven't watched in YEARS!) in my underwear (yeah, I know - TMI!). One of our driveway alerts went off and got the dog going. We get false alarms from time to time so I wasn't too concerned, but I got up and looked out the window and there were headlights coming slowly down the driveway. I flipped on the floods, threw on a pair of pants and grabbed my pistol. By the time I got out to the deck, they were turning around and heading back out the driveway, leaving tracks through my grass in the process. I grabbed my keys, put my shoes on hopped in my truck but couldn't find them. I did call the dispatcher as I was driving around and gave them a description but without a license number, there wasn't much to go on other than a red pickup with amber marker lights above the cab.

So, to answer the OP's question - No, there is nothing wrong with you. Or me either, for that matter. No one has a right or a legitimate reason to come down a dark lane after midnight on a Saturday night. This is the third or fourth time this has happened in the 5 years we've lived here. This is the first time that I wasn't fast enough to get in my vehicle and follow them while on the phone with the dispatcher.

Each time I keep adding to our security measures. Sweetie and I have been talking about a gate and I think I'm going to go ahead and pull the trigger on one now. I'm also going to put in another camera that has better night vision than the one I currently have.

I'm generally a really friendly guy and try not to be too much of a *#$$ if someone comes down the driveway during the day. Generally they're just older, local folks that are inviting others to their church. I did have one guy that was selling frozen meet out the back of his truck and I told him he'd better be paying better attention to the No Trespassing sign on my drive and others in the future. But, as I said - there's no legitimate reason for someone to be coming down a dark lane late at night.

I had people pose wedding pictures in the driveway.

Fence posers all the time.

If I'm on the tractor, I photo bomb...

People trespassing is entirely you're fault........what with such a beautiful farm!!

That place looks ridiculously gorgeous.

x3!!!

I love the Lexington area. Beautiful rolling hills and beautiful farms all around. Actually, once you get south of the Cinci airport, it starts getting like that.

Too bad you can't get a hold of some of those photo-bomb shots!! THAT would be pretty funny!

Many years ago there was a company that took aerial photos of large properties(mainly farms) and then would come around and try to sell the photos. That has gone by the wayside with software like Google Earth being available.

Had one of these guys come up my drive past the posted sign about 30 years ago. I tore up the photo he handed me and informed him if I caught him on or over my property again he was going down.

Then there are the roving preachers trying to save us all. I guess they think POSTED NO TRESPASSING doesn't apply to them.

My property is fenced and gated now.

More recently I had some neighbors come flying through my gate and drive back and all over a wooded section on my property in their golf cart. I try to make it a point not to leave my gate open any more.

Good fences make good neighbors!

For the first few years in this house had a constant flow of folk trying to save us. Finally after two group in an 1/2 hour one Saturday I put up these signs.

"Picturesque" does not adequately describe your place. I would find it hard to blame someone for wanting a picture of themselves in such a beautiful setting. Wedding pictures are a bit much, but you do have a lot to be proud of. We drove through Lexington many years ago, and I was struck by the beauty of the whole area. Everything looked so green, trimmed and cared for; not to mention the barns, fences, homes, etc. I remember in particular seeing an old barn in a pasture that my untrained eye pegged as an old tobacco barn, with horses grazing nearby. As they say, "Pretty as a picture".

Guns are simply tools bad people use in malicious manners. Eliminate guns and bad people will simply find something else to use to harm others.

I carry a gun. It's a tool on my belt just like the Leatherman and flashlight on the other hip, and 4" Cresent wrench in my pocket. If the situation is such that I have to defend myself or my family with my plyers, I will use them or anything else I can to do so.

The leval of respect for others and being held accountable for one's actions has been lost in recent years. Too many people thinking they can act in real life like they see on TV, the way people act towards each other on so many shows that fill the channels, even "kids" shows, offer no good role models. Combine that with the reduction in effective disaplin in schools and homes, and here we are today... parents and teachers alike can't touch a kid without the fear of being charged with child abuse. The result is kids walking around with their eyes glued to phone screens, not bothering to hold the door for the elderly lady they just walked in front of...

Ok... rant over...

Great post; great thread. There are several issues here that I find interesting; good guy vs. bad guy; city vs. country, sanctity of private property; guns and right of self defense, etc. Let me start by posting this video, a scene from the movie "Shane". It embodies the gun issues as nothing else ever has, at least for me. I find it particularly poignant.

As for the sanctity of private property, my observations come from being a country boy who, in spite of its shortcomings, loved country life and country people. We were raised to respect other people's property in a way that no city person can. They grow up where folks are crowded together, everything they see and use belongs to the government except maybe their own personal belongings in their subsidized apartment. They ride the subway, the only grass they walk on is in a city park; they even have to go to the city zoo to look at a pig. It's no wonder they have no concept of private property and personal privacy.

If you live in the country and want your privacy, especially where there are fences, gates and signs, people should respect your wishes...and most people will. If they don't, to me they are acting irrationally, and this is a BIG red flag. They are either stupid, desperate, or looking to do you harm. I often think of the Clutter family; I would rather be safe than sorry.
