So I was in a big hurry Wednesday morning and all most out of fuel. I rolled into a fuel
Station that I unfamiliar with and started filling up the dodge. When I hit the 30 gallon mark I thought OH S*#%, I just filled my truck up with off road. I hope I don't go to jail. Does anyone know if this is high or low sulfer? If it is high sulfer will the Cummings be ok.
Thanks for your time.

I know guys that cheat and run it all the time, (not me) and I've yet to see anyone have a engine problem because of it...

Now, tell the truth, you really WANTED to run that stuff! lol

The engine will be fine. It'll take many tanks full of clear diesel before the dye disappears though. Until then,,,,, if by some remotely small chance you got checked,,,, you'd be fined. But that ain't gonna happen.

Depending on how you paid for the fuel you may/may not have been charged road tax?? If you were charged road tax, I'd throw that receipt in the glove box for a while as proof that you didn't "get away" with anything. At my local station if I get red fuel using any credit card other than the companies "farm" card the pump charges me road tax.

The only difference is the dye and the possible jail time.

I'm in AG country and next to an Interstate Hiway. Very common to see the State Hiway Patrol DOT truck cruising around looking to catch illegal truckers, local and nonlocal. They have the authority to "stick" your tank looking for red diesel. There's also a woman patrolman cruising in a pickup that only sticks tanks. She's around quite a bit and has authority to stick any tank. She constantly checks farmer's grain trucks and diesel pickups.

The way I understand it here, if caught MODOT checks your licensing records to see how many miles a year you average and then can impose road tax on the estimated amount of fuel you would have used over the past year. Then on top of that they add a flat fine. Supposedly is in the thousands of dollars. But I've not heard of anyone getting caught to verify that.

I've always wondered about trucks with two tanks. Couldn't a farmer or rancher keep off-road diesel in one tank for use on the ranch and regular diesel for road use?

How would they determine if you were using it improperly?

Only other thing I would add, not sure this applies in your situation. If you take your truck into a dealership for service and they discover red fuel they are required by law to report it. I guess that might depend on how well you know your dealership??

I carry a "red fuel" transfer tank/pump in my Super Duty. They determine improper use by sticking the truck's fuel tank. Here they use a wand with a sponge end that absorbs the red dye and clearly shows a violation.

I have heard that they will check for discolored fuel filters as well... the fuel may be long gone but the filter will still be red.

I would drain the tank as much as possible, fill with highway diesel, run it out to empty a few times, refilling each time, then change filters.
