Do the naysayers realize how much wood is still holding up that vertical tree? (Which assuming no wind and even branch distribution has very little horizontal forces on it.) There's almost more 6"x6" posts in that trunk than hold up my pole barn (in the wind). I'd bet you could hook a cable on that tree and you'd probably pull the roots out of the ground before the kid gets punched.
The kid was pretty safe. The kid is far more likely to get hurt riding in a car. I have been unable to pull trees over with the tractor that only have about 2 inches of wood left.

Well, if balanced or forced toward the notch its in great shape. ... If loaded away from the notch is when the surprise might come.

Almost certainly the child is in more danger riding in a car but that doesn't mean I don't squirm looking at it. Just a visceral thing and I'm not fanatically safety conscious.

Just the fact that the man thinks what he has done with the child is funny, cute, neat etc says volumes about his maturity. Safe or not - if he would do this with the child, what else could he do?

Is there any question in your mind - what he wants us to think regarding this picture?

I once saw a father put his daughter on the hand railing on the downstream side of the road crossing over Grand Coulee dam. She was allowed to walk - unassisted - for about twenty feet on this handrail. Its a 350 foot drop off this railing to the base of the dam on the downstream side. Everyone who witnessed this unfortunate event was simply paralyzed with fear. Finally the pictures were taken by the father and he took his daughter down. The instant the child was placed safely on the roadway the father was taken away, clapped in irons and - I hope - given considerable time to think about his acts while in grey-bar city.

Hopefully these two events do not represent the same level of danger to the child - but maybe the father started these escapades by placing his child in the notch of a tree.

I don't think there is a person who has posted who actually thinks that tree is near falling. It would be standing there 10 years from now if nothing else was done to it. It is the point of a father using his kid, in what may look to most people like a dangerous situation, to get a laugh. Just poor taste IMO. Dads should be protecting their kids.. not making it look like they are in danger of being crushed by a tree.

Exactly. Well stated.

I got the "willies" just reading your recounting of that story. Wow, it is hard to believe someone would do such a thing to their child, but like I said, I saw Michael Jackson do the baby dangling thing. So I know it happens.

I showed it to my wife without saying anything and she said "oh that makes my skin craw, why don't he stick his head in there?"
