Looking in the front axle fill, it looks oily, but totally without standing fluid. I need to get something in their pronto.

My massey gc 1715 uses either agco permatran hydrailic fluid in the front axle or a 75w-90 synthetic gear oil (synthetic because its cold climates in western wi).

Can you tell me more about "it is just a mechanical brake" ? Like a disk brake? Caliper brake?

Maybe I can adjust the threads under the deck to make a shorter throw before it bottoms out.

It is a disc brake that is actuated by a lever that is connected to the brake pedal by a rod, there is no hydraulic "boost" to it.

To get an in-depth look at your tractor go to AGCO Parts Books select guest user and search for your model of tractor. With a little practice you can find out what every part in your tractor is, and what the part number is to replace it.

The tires will either be turf (small blocks in a grid), R1 (typical farm tractor tires, or v-bar tread) or R4 (industrial tire, which has a v-bar'ish appearance with wider, flatter bars than R1). Just remember there a multiple versions of each style of tire. One reference http://www.farmingequipmentcanada.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/Used-tractor-tires-300x202.jpg

EH, that would be a 1956 PA-22-150. Currently have the wings in my garage for some needed repairs-- last time they were re-worked, it seems quite a few short cuts were taken.

Found a plastic gas can spout sitting inside the right tank (here's a view through the fuel gauge sender), as well as a totally plugged up finger strainer in the forward tank outlet :grumpy: A labor of love. Wish it worked as well as my GC2310!

When buying anything used my rule is change every fluid ASAP and don't even run it without changing the oil. That way you know what oil is in it. Use a synthetic Rotella for the engine and a good Premium filter. I like Napa Gold. For the Trans filter get it from a dealer along with your hydraulic oil. It probably needs Permatran for the transmision and it will run you about $100 for a 5 gallon pail. Just go to the nearest Massey dealer and ask them for everything you need for a 500 hour service, minus the engine oil and filter. Get that somewhere like Napa. If you tractor is like mine and I'm pretty sure they almost identical the permatran bucket should be enough for both your tranny and your axles.

2ndhalf,

The dealer trip is on plan. I'm trying to bundle everything "special" into one trip. In the meantime, I keep building the list of needed items.

I noticed that my front axle is oily, but has no standing fluid in it. I think that's incorrect. The same hydraulic fluid goes in the axle? BTW, on the side, I'm also doing fluids on a White GT205 garden tractor and its hydraulic transmission asks for diesel rated 20W-50 engine oil (API SH/CD). I was surprised it uses engine oil in the hydraulics. I'm surprised the MF uses hydraulic oil in the front axle (I would have expected a gear oil).

Also, I use Rotella T6 (their fully synthetic 5W-40) in my diesel Jetta engine. The 5 weight helps with the turbocharger and cold starts. I'm wondering if I can go with the Rotella T5 half-synthetic or the Rotella T 15W-40 for engine oil in the tractor. Which NAPA Gold oil filter number do you use?

In the case of my tractor, the transaxles use the same as my hydraulic transmission. My guess is that is the same with yours but confirm that with your manual. Most Hydraulic transmission oil is very similar to engine oil and in some cases is engine oil.
Either of those Rotella's would work fine. You can either walk into Napa with the old filter or model of tractor or use the two cross reference links below. You can cross reference all your filters this way. Look up the part number on Agco. then go to the NAPA filter search with that number and it will tell you the right NAPA filter.

Looks like you need NAPA Gold 1360 (Same as mine) - have them cross check it though.. I always do.

Part Number Lead Time

2ndhalf,

Yes. Okay. That's what I've done. I've used FRAM filters for years so that's what I cross referenced. However it comes up with two numbers PH4967 and PH4746. When I got a '4967, it looks identical to the one on my wife's Toyota Camry (can't remember the number off hand) except the MF filter is a little stubbier.

Your NAPA idea yields a cleaner cross reference to only the NAPA 1360. I see the WIX 51360, too.

Just use the premium of what ever your filter choice... most are pretty good.

Got the Owner's Manual!

Page 65 says the brake play at the pedal should be about 7/8-1 1/8". Mine is about 3-4" ! I definitely need to adjust the pedal using the turnbuckle method described on the same page.

Tires in the book show as 18x8.50-10 and 26x12.0-12. The relative size is important to keep the relative speed when in 4WD. However, my tractor came with 16x6.5-8 on the front and 23x9.5-12 on the back - studded tires that look like R4 with studs.

Got the manual! Regarding the differential lock...

"To engage differential lock, allow all rear wheel movement to stop, then depress and hold the lock pedal while resuming ground travel. // To disengage differential lock, release differential lock pedal." It also says don't turn, don't drive on hard surfaces because the gearing will be stressed a lot.
