So to rectify it for people for in Ohio they just sell either cords or add "about a" to load of woods guys are selling, and let the person decide.
It is a law that isnt enforced in Ohio either.
When I sell wood, it is by the cord, or by the 1/2 cord. And most reputable guys sell like that. What is wrong with having a standard way to measure wood so one can compare?
When you buy milk, its gallons or half gallons. Even the small containers are in ounces.....something people can look at and know exactaly what they are getting.
Coal....by the ton or pound
Feed....ton or pound
Wood pellets.....by the ton or pound
etc etc etc.
There is a guy near me selling wood in a single axle dump truck. Piled high. $375 I have no idea if stacked out that would be 2 cord, or 4 cord, or what? Hardwood sells for ~$150-160/cord in my area....so no way to compare a "dumptruck load"
Selling by a cord eliminates confusion. Again, a truckload isnt a measurement. If I call an ad to buy a truckload of wood, and the guy shows up in a short bed, level full, and thrown in......and I was expecting an 8' bed heaped on......see the delima? So I complain and refuse the load....seller gets unhappy because he loaded up and drove all the way out there, just not a good situation.
There is also alot of people selling by the cord that are crooks too, because too many people dont know what a cord is. My 8' bed, with a 10" side board, stacked tight and 5 rows, and rounded/heaped in the middle, is a cord of wood. I cannot begin to count the number of times customers have commented or asked (is that just one cord!), and say it is way more wood that the last guy that brought them a "cord"
The law is on the books to protect the consumer. Most guys selling firewood are just doing it for a hobby, are unaware of the law, and arent a legitimate business. And if no complaints are received, I think the state takes a "no harm no foul" stance. No if someone had a legitimate business and/or storefront, and started selling 90cu-ft of wood and calling it a cord, and the state started getting complaints.....I would bet they would step in.
