I need an AR-15

Skill and wits? Thought you said you use a bow? How about camo, is that allowed? Aluminum tree stands or do you climb a tree and sit on a branch?

I didn't mean to imply that I bow hunt. I permit it on my property. I hunt stumps armed with a tractor, backhoe and ripper so I am guilty of using the latest technology. On the other hand, I do give the stumps fair warning to move and I don't wear camo.

1) I met Davy Crockett at the movies when I was a kid. Cool dude. Great hat.
2) I suppose in the near future you guys will be justifying hunting with laser weapons too but I rather like the image of a hunter getting just one fair shot at prey. Honestly I prefer bow hunting (and permit it on my property) but I do recognize that firearms are here to stay.
3) No doubt a weapon designed for combat would be more useful at the Alamo. But, we're discussing hunting so unless laser weapons and drone scouts are also to become routine weapons in sport hunting, I still think it is reasonable to debate the need for assault rifles outside the shooting range. I do understand James' point that one can fire just one bullet but rather doubt that is what happens when an AR 15 is involved. I do understand it must be fun to rattle off multiple rounds but why not keep that thrill for the target range and keep hunting from just becoming an arms race. The prey haven't changed, why do hunters need the latest and greatest technology rather than just their skill and wits?

Probably a good topic for another thread. This thread is about the OP asking for information on an AR with AR owners responding with good info

Doc, do you have some mental image of some nimrod, drawing down on a deer with an AR platform rifle and unleashing multiple rounds at said game animal? I will assure you it is not an accurate image most of the time. Usually you don't put any more holes in your table fare than is necessary for a clean and humane kill.

If a quick follow up shot or even two is necessary for a quick and humane kill then by all means do so, and I have. But as for "spraying and praying", no, that is not the norm. I am not saying there might not be idiots out there that would do that, but it is severely frowned upon by sportsmen and most DNR's. In fact many states have magazine limits for hunting rifles. 5 rounds is common. Our state is pretty liberal with a 10 round limitation, but that was in effect so the old .303 British rifle that held 10 rounds could be used for deer hunting.

I appreciate having a quick follow up shot on tap to anchor a game animal if the first one was not placed good enough for a quick humane kill. While I have never shot a deer (or a Deere for that matter:)) with an AR platform rifle, I have shot some with my Remington 7400 semi-auto rifle whose operation is the same as any other AR semi-auto rifle.

The main reason I like the AR better is that the Remington is a pain in the butt to clean and maintain as compared to the AR. Both guns are black, as if that matters. Both are semi-auto. Both propel bullets out the bore of their respective barrels. As for which one is more deadly, I guess that is up to the operator.:)

The point of my dissertation here is that a firearm is just a tool and is under control of the operator of that firearm. If you want to be an idiot with a firearm you can be an idiot with a firearm no matter its action or features. If you want to be a sportsman with a firearm, you will be a sportsman with a firearm no matter its action or features. I hope I have broadened your outlook on firearms a bit.:)

You have. It's not the serious sportsmen that bother me. And I support hunting in general. It's the yahoos on Youtube with guns (here, hold my beer) and imagining them walking through the forest as though it was a 3D first person shooter adventure. I'll just have to trust that the more reasonable folks keep that sort of behavior in check. On our island, only bow hunting is permitted. We still find arrows in residential grounds FAR from legitimate hunting areas so it isn't just the AR crowd that worries me. I guess the bottom line is that we cannot keep idiots out of the forest so I tend to favor limiting the types of weaponry they can take with them. I recognize fully that is painting with a very broad brush and that the considerable majority of hunters don't fit that negative image at all. Maybe the rule should be that you can hunt with a weapon or beer but not both!

... I still think it is reasonable to debate the need for assault rifles outside the shooting range. ...

Please, everyone, an AR-15 is not an Assault Rifle. This is the biggest misnomer and only fuels the anti-gunners sickening arguments. It's especially disgusting to hear it from those anti-gunners who have body guards carrying AR-15's.

AR-15-platform rifles are among the most popular firearms being sold. They are today's modern sporting rifle. The AR in "AR-15" rifle stands for ArmaLite rifle, after the company that developed it in the 1950s. "AR" does NOT stand for "assault rifle" or "automatic rifle."

...and yours needs some toilet paper...... Interesting, you suppose I own a 50. I don't. In fact, I hunt with a 308. I've taken elk at 500 yards with a 168 Berger VLD hunter in a Lapua case but thats not here nor there, what is, is you need to wipe your butthole.....

If you don't like AR-15s, Bro...why even bother posting on this thread?

We gun owners need to stick together...not bicker over what types of firearms you don't like.
Our enemy is the anti-rights people...not each other.
And, this is not only directed to you...it's also directed toward others (including me)
