JD 3005 full cage ROPS/FOPS build

Hi,

The hood guard comes off real easy. There are pins on the front held in place by clips, and the back end is held in place by switchable magnets I bought from Grizzly tools. Takes about a minute to remove and replace.

There is a very old thread showing build details. I will see if I can find it, if it still exists. I will post the link if I do.

Henro: thanks for posting the links to your thread... part of my reason for starting this thread was/is to stimulate the thought and design process for others, and compile our ideas.

I have had no roof or overhead protection on my cage since installed, still undecided on what to use. Expanded metal would allow protection with visibility, but shed no water. An old roof section (ribbed sheet metal) from a van i scrapped was saved and stored, but i cant bring myself to cut a 3'x4' piece out of the middle of a nice 5'x9' sheet of metal! Yesterday I found a piece of 3/4" plywood and put it up there, as I've been in the woods alot lately and wanted something to stop a falling branch other than my head. Temporary but works for now.

When I put a roof on a ROPS cage years ago I went to a sheet metal shop and had them fold up a top and edges with an "X" pressed/formed/folded in the metal like on the side of a furnace. That allowed it to shed water and was my cheapest option that looked good. It looked factory.

I've been thinking about either a used dumpster lid or a used golf cart canopy. :confused3:

Golf car canopies are almost always too small and dumpster canopies look like you put a dumpster canopy on the tractor. I'll try to find a photo of my sheet metal shop canopy and you would be impressed. Everyone thought it was factory and it was just thin sheet metal with one of those folded "X's" into it to hump it up a bit and shed water.

I used a canopy off an old JD backhoe.

That's a good looking fit. Do you happen to know the measurements of your top? I want to put a top on my MX5100 but the ROPS is really wide and I cannot find one to cover the width of the framework.
