Building a Car Port

   / Building a Car Port #31
Finally had the area utilities marked and laid out the post holes. Started digging them Saturday but it was too cold and windy to finish them. Will try to get them finished tonight so the inspector can visit Wednesday. Trusses on order with a four week delivery but that gives me time to get the lower end of the framing completed while waiting.

Anyone have suggestions on how best to put a 16' six by six post in a 12" hole three feet deep? Seems highly unlikely that I can safely and simply set one end at the hole and lift the other end until it falls in. There must be some interesting tricks out there that folks have used which would be cheaper than renting a crane. :D

Thank you

If you have the equipment this is how I put in my post. (6x6 and 6x8 18')

In this forum I have a thread called "Raising a barn" you might find the pictures helpful for your project.

And that's what happens if you don't make vertical holes.

True and then I found this weird object in my garage. A level, and woolaw. I could have used a 3 point post hole digger but this bobcat drills a much straighter hole. And my neighbor was happy to do it.

All elevations were done with a water level.
There was a lot of work between drilling holes and the end. Still not quite there but close.
jlgurr, I wish you the best it will be worth it. Even if you have a neighbor/friend/relative with the ability to lift the posts up with a bigger tractor, it sure makes setting them in place easy.

... Either pack the hole tight with the dirt that came out of there and build up a mound for water to drain away, or use concrete and create a mound. ....

Eddie,

Is this why some folks use those tubes in their holes so that the concrete surface can be poured higher than the ground surface? I haven't quite figured out if I should be using the tubes or not.

Thanks,
Jeff

Has anyone ever used an auger to drill a post hole then find out you were off on your location by less than the diameter of the auger? :mur:Am I doomed to using handheld PHD to "move" hole center or are there tricks to re-drilling off center from the original drill point?

That's what 24 inch diameter augers are for. :)

Does the post have to be centered in the hole?

Using 6" x 6" posts in a hole that is currently 12" diameter. Not much room for sideways movement since at least one of the holes is off by 6" (I know, it's my fault. Should have measured twice before digging.)

I also think the inspector jinxed me when he informed me he was a stickler on posts being centered in the concrete in the hole. LOL!

Good point! When I add one of these to my stable (rather than borrowing) I'll be sure to remember that. :D Was thinking of drilling right next to the current hole, break out the wall between them and using a 12" concrete tube form and backfilling with dirt around the form.
