How much rust can under-body spray stop?

I have no doubt that States North of Missouri get more exposure. The naïve part is to think that someone that lives in the Boonies in Michigan and rarely goes to town would be exposed to more corrosive road material than the City dweller in Northern Missouri that commutes to work in town every day. Not calling anyone names, just clarifying that what State you live in isn't the only factor in regards to exposure to corrosion with your vehicle. :)

Coobie, shhh! We don't want others to know we all live in the boonies and there are no jobs to commute to or towns to work in. Our cottage industry of making rust should remain exclusive, lest we lose market share of our #1 export to Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. :D

btw, I bought the fancier gun & 18"(?) flex extension for FF but haven't used them yet. My gun's 'air-hose' thread is nothing like our familiar NPT or NPS threads, JIC, etc. The local Parker store here fixed me up with a BSPP fitting for my hose. It's so nice to have them nearby, .. out here in the boonies. (An auto paint/gun supplier should have similar.) tog

Horse? I thought we were talking about vehicles. Can horses rust? :)

If you get enough rust around your motor mounts I suppose all of your horses could fall out on the ground.

Richard has ofically taken MO off my search list for "southernish" states when looking for used vehicles on c/l.:D
I previoulsy would not have imagined much if any salt use. (due to my ignorance of MO)

And that's only the state maintained highways. The counties maintain the majority of the roads in Michigan. Berrien County, for example, just north of us, used 7900 tons of salt in 2014. Then there's the cities, towns and villages within Berrien county that used 4050 tons combined. So 11,950 tons in addition to the 28,900 tons that the state uses just in Berrien County (I94 probably gets the most of it).
Total: 40,850 tons of salt just in one county. That one county in Michigan consumes as much salt as 1/5 the entire amount of salt used on Missouri state highways. There's 83 counties in Michigan. Granted, some counties like Berrien use way more than others due to the large highways and their proximity to Lake Michigan.

If you're interested, here's a link to a page about road salt usage in Michigan by the state. Scroll down in the article and there's a tool that lets you select each county in Michigan to see how much salt the state applies in each of those counties.

Then there's this link, which can show you how much salt is being used by your county, and cities, towns and villages in each county as reported.

What's kind of neat is on that one, you can select ALL or SPECIFIC salt companies that they are purchasing from.

When I talked to NH Oil Undercoating they said that just about every vehicle 6-7 yrs or newer had enough drain hole to get everything without drilling. Any thoughts?

They all always had drain holes, and plugs, you could use to access things. With the right equipment, that certainly could be possible.

The idea is, you fog the entire inside of the panel, so everything gets some product on it.

Unless you live by the ocean, with the exception of the wheel wells, it's only the bottom 1/3 of the vehicle, you really need to be concerned with treating.

Door bottoms can fairly easily be done through the bottom drain holes, using a $15 aerosol can, and the included extension for the nozzle.

Personally I prefer to remove any interior trim necessary, to not only spray it, but to verify it was covered properly. No rustproofer I know of, is going to want to do that for you.

Some vehicles, (usually the expensive ones), have sound deadening inside them, which is nothing more than a plastic bag, filled with rebound thread, or fiberglass insulation. They are commonly laying on top of the rear wheel housings. As well as other areas, like in the front fenders, and quarter panels. If you don't remove those, before spraying, you can't get to the metal under it.

I had the tailgate trim panel off of my new minivan, last fall, so I sprayed the inside bottom. I left it open, to air out for 4 days, and then, I put it back together. It still stunk up the inside of the van, for a month. :knockout:

You wouldn't think I could smell anything, after 35 years working in a body shop, but I guess I am particularly sensitive. :confused3:
