Elizabeth Stamatina Fey is the person that says she could see Russia from her house. She made the start of her career by making fun of Sarah Palin, and has made millions from her subsequent fame. There is good money to be made in making fun of people.
Okay, for those who are interested, here are some photo's of an F150 bedside rotted out, due to the use of soft foam sealer, between the inner, and outer panels, during manufacture.
The first photo shows a close up of a piece of the foam, after it was dug out of this whole area.
The second photo, shows a hole, with the foam still visible inside.
This is a 2005. It was built more than 20 years after Toyota proved conclusively, that if you use this foam as a sealer between the inner and outer panels, it will rot out, in certain climates.
I was paid by Toyota to replace both quarter panels on many Camry's, back in the 80's. They they tried this trick, possibly first, and found it caused these issues.
Today, manufacturers still use this product, even though they have to know this can happen.
This is also what causes the quarter panels to rot out, around the gas doors on GM cars.
No amount of rust proofing seems to be able to stop this from happening. And, you can't remove this foam, without cutting it open.
Some may argue, it's a 2005? What do you expect? Well, the only rust through on this vehicle, is both bed sides. And, it's only where the foam is. So, what I expect, is for them to not use a product, that is known to cause the vehicle to rot. But, that seems to be asking too much.
I have also seen this happen on vehicles that were much newer.
This same foam is used to attach the outer door panels to the I beam, inside the door. That is usually about in the middle of the door. Because it's not at the bottom, moisture isn't trapped there, so it does not cause issues.

VW did the same thing, and every front fender will eventually rust through where this foam is attached to the sheet metal. Easy to change a front fender though...and cheap.

The good news for VW owners is that they have a 12-YEAR rust warranty. I got my 2003 Jetta's front fenders replaced for free after 160k miles and 11 years of driving in Michigan. Beautiful.

Ford foam is bad mojo. What were they thinking!!!?! Barely one step up from backyard "bodymen" using Mono to get a car through inspection. Not only is it dumb for corrosion purposes, it produces a nice toxic flame when burned while welding in patch pannels:laughing:

Some of that may be an over bearing government. My truck from 1999 is still on the road, and I am in the rust belt. But the government doesn't stick its nose under my truck.
Some places in Canada are experimenting with beat juice, not red. It will work at lower temps then salt.

I have wondered about, saying screw looks and rhino lining bottom of quarter panels and wheel wells.
Not sure how it hold up for a truck used off road, but I had an Explorer that the bottom was all plastic. Smartest thing I have seen. For most people it is not going to get banged around. I suppose moisture could get behind it, and not be able to breath. It was 7 years old when I got rid of it, 136k miles, wanted something bigger, looked good.

She did the skit on SNL. I watched it. Maybe she wasn't a regular at the time, but that is where she did it. She did several Palin spoofs on SNL during that election. She even did ones with Palin herself and John McCain himself on SNL.

On to the main topic... Check out The Rust Store - Solutions for All Rust Problems for stuff. They have a great rust converter I use on commercial trucks. just scrape off the very heavy rust, lightly brush off the rusted area with a simple nylon bristle brush, spray or paint their rust converter on it. It cures to a paintable, primed surface. Have not tried it on bodies, but on heavier metal parts, frames, brackets, etc, it is a darn good product.
