Wouldnt you have to take the difference between the weight of the barrel, and the weight of the rod?
In one orientation, you are lifting the barrel + loader frame. In the other, you are lifting the rod + loader frame.

And in most of our CUT loader cylinders, I think the rod and barrel are pretty equal in weight.

Apology accepted.

Appreciate it!

Less hose/lines needed since hydraulic lines typically go on one side of the loader boom and then to the other side on most removable loaders.

The really old loaders often were manual trip bucket (no hyd on loader boom) and the cylinders stayed on the tractor (remove loader with 4 pins and no hydraulic disconnect needed)

Last loader we had that the cylinders stayed on the tractor was an IH 1850, but it had hydraulic bucket so you left the lift cylinders on the tractor and used the quick connects to release the bucket cylinders, 4 pins for loader removal.

After reading all of this I have to admit I'm really dissapointed in mysfit. You had these guys going and you caved..you could have possibly extended this a few more pages by saying something like pushing down gravity would increase the force? Set the hook, the bobber was going under...lol

Well, a HUGE mea culpa for me! I don't know where my head was yesterday! I give you all permission to have a good laugh at my expense. I'm sure having a good laugh at myself.:ashamed: Please accept my apology for being a bit 'testy' with my replies. I hope I didn't ruffle your feathers too much!

Don't worry about it. Last year it took several people several days and the threat of physical violence (get in a car, come up there and slap you around) to get me to understand a hydraulic issue that was too simple for me to comprehend. It finally took me sitting down at the computer for several hours and making myself an animated drawing or two. Then I had to find a recipe for crow, lightly salted of course.

Finally got caught up on the sleep. Now I'm human again, so forward we go!

I am thinking we should start a thread again on whether putting weight on the 3PT will reduce weight on the front axle. :D Oh! What happens if we turn a hydraulic cylinder sideways. Hey this has been a fun thread!

What happens if we turn a hydraulic cylinder sideways.

It pushes sideways.

Depending on the side that the rod is on will determine weather it pushes left or right:laughing:

Oh, and watch rod size when doing it horizontal. Dont want gravity bowing the rod by 0.00000001". Hard on the gland seal

I talked to a cyl . repair man about the same thing . All the forces are the same .. It depends on the people who spec it out . That excavator with rods down would be subject to a hit from a large rock . All the backhoes , excavators , dozers , I have run have the rod going north .

I am still convinced it has nothing to do with rod protection or gland seal protection. Rather hose routing.

If on an backhoe, if the barrel was pointing north and the rod south, everytime that function operated that barrel would extend away from where the rod is mounted, and thus the hoses and hydraulic lines would also have to move.

With the rod pointed north, the only movement of the barrel is basically rotation. So its easier to route the hoses.

Basically, the barrel is attached to whatever the hydraulic lines are.

I'm with LD1.
