Pin Won't Budge

Do you have the ability to weld? I've pulled stubborn pins by welding a bolt to the pin and slipping a pipe over with a few washers and just pulling on it with the nut. This also works really well on stubborn gib keys. You could put pressure on with the bolt and hammer the pin from the other side.

Another idea that would work is to drill about 3/4's of the diameter of the center of the pin out to within an inch of the far side. Slide a sturdy bar into the hole and hammer away. The hole in the pin relieves the stress and hammering on the bar pulls the pin out of the hole.

As previously mentioned a bit of heat and a wax candle goes a long way also. I do that quite often on broken off bolts but it helps for stubborn pins too.

trust the ones that say use heat to melt bees wax into the pin area let cool, hi pit pin, repeat until out. it really works. use brass drift pin. won't mushroom pin.

Dont know if it is too late to comment, but I use a 50/50 mix of synthetic ATF and acetone as a solvent. Works well. I have also heated the outside of a pin housing and used dry ice on the pin - make sure to use good gloves.

Hope you find a solution.

If all else fails find a line boring outfit that can drill it out for you, or better yet have the special tools we all wish we have.

It's hard to believe it took 23 replies before the someone mentioned ATF and acetone.

Yep heat on the outside and dry ice on the pin.

Once I tried it, it became my go to in the shop. I keep it in a pump oil can I got for a buck at a yard sale. Still carry WD40 and Break Free in the trailer and truck though

I gave up, ordered a new pin, and simply used a sawzall and cutting fluid to slice through the pin on either side of the rod. Both cuts took only 35 minutes - much less than I had anticipated. I then took the swing frame to a machinist and had him press out what was now two pins. Thanks for all the recommendation for the future. Hopefully I will not need to use any of them!

Was it just that dry and rusty?, or had it worn a notch?

It was dry and rusty - seems to have never seen a spit of grease - as if it was originally assembled dry. Is here such a thing as 'assembly' grease that is designed to permanently (relatively speaking) protect steel surfaces and prevent oxidation/rust? I do not plan on doing this job again, but one never knows and the next owner may appreciate not having to go through the same pain.

regular greasing and use is all it should need. My hoe sat for over a year and a half before I got it. Had to beat out probably half the pins one at a time and wire brush them and clean out the hardened grease.
Should be good to go for another 30 years
