newbury yes! Great question I couldn't even figure out how to ask. Hardly anything over 30" dbh. Mostly in the 20" and under range. We do have some big poplars 30"-36" that are going for good money right now ($385/1kbf). I really intend to leave the larger trees, or have someone else take the huge poplars and the many white pines, some planted in stands and some not that need to go. Up to 24" with some a little bigger. Too bad the price is terrible right now.

16' logs would be ideal. I think either tractor will skid them but the 5660 more easliy. Lifting onto the mill was my question. Would like to work it with forks. Sounds like either tractor will work for that too. This is where I can really see the HST might shine, and I'm going to wish I had a skid steer. But the M would do heavier work. The lever is pretty easy to use while keeping your hand on the wheel. hmmmm.....

Your project makes mine seem a little less daunting. If you are doing well with the 4700 skidding logs and putting them on the mill that tells me a lot. Thanks for your advice on this.

Sounds like the only difference between the MX5200 and MX5800 is a different turbo? They are both turbo charged. Same engine.

If that is so, I wonder if it would be better for longevity to have the one that is "holding back" a little.

Otherwise the extra HP for 1600 price difference is tempting. Same hp as the 5660, 2k cheaper.

Hey guys, I know I have worn out my welcome with the going in circles and long posting in this thread. Going to a dealer today who might be looking to bargain, I may decide to pull the trigger if he gets the price right for me. Just curious about this MX5200 vs 5800 thing (previous post). Can anyone provide some insight there?

That's a good question to ask your dealer while your there today. Lots of very good advice got you this far. Now it's time to feel out the dealer with the information you now have.

Relax, your not going to buy the wrong tractor. Trust your instincts, you will do fine.

Yeah, I'd look for the lowest hour MX5100 I could find. Already a classic. HS

My MX manual covers both 4800 and 5200. The only difference being the 5200 has a turbo and standard extendable 3pth lift arms. Otherwise identical, including hydraulic capacities. The 5800 must be enough diferent to justify a separate users manual. :confused3:

At some point you have to change from the TRACTOR debate to the 'HOW MANY ANGELS CAN DANCE ON THE HEAD OF A PIN?' debate.

The effective difference between somewhere around 52-horspower and somewhere around 58-horsepower is insignificant.

The important factors are both tractors are heavy and have large tires, within the CUT class.

Well....almost bought it. The M5660 that is. I can't describe why but I just like it better. I know HST is great, but for some reason I just don't like the MX as much.

They are calling Monday to firm up the deal, but he's at 31K with loader and 3rd funtion valve. I feel that is a good price. And I like this dealership better, however it is pretty far away (about 75 minutes drive). I KNOW they have great service, my boss deals with them pretty often and he's tough to please. Plus they say they will come get it if there's a problem.

One of the closer (50mins) dealers REALLY wants the sale though, says he is going to beat any price. Going to go by there tomorrow and drive them once more, see if he can give a lower price. Don't like him as much, kinda car salesman-y, but he is persistent so I am going to give due diligence. He claims their service is great.

Decision time on Monday I think. Thanks for the support guys.

houstonscott - you're the devil on my shoulder! Or maybe the angel, the devil might be the one talking me into this bigger tractor. The 5100 is a tempting option. There is one with 130hrs over in Alabama for 23.5k. Long way to go though, no warranty, no information about previous owner and uses...ahh what to do.

Almost every dealer has an HD truck and and HD trailer and will haul a tractor for service.

Expect to pay $1.50 to $2.00 per mile. 40 miles X 4 (two round trips) = 160 X $1.50 = $240 // 160 X $2.00 = $320 transportation cost.

That may seem high but it likely just covers the dealers cost, allowing 4-1/2 hours of mechanic/driver's time, insurance, fuel, loading/tie down and unloading.
