Recently got my 19', 8000 pound, steel deck trailer from Kaufman primarily to haul my track car and my tractor. But I love getting multiple uses from things so I made a box out of 2x6s to fit in the stake pockets and used some cheap OSB to protect the deck and filled it with sand out of my creek and hauled it 50 miles to my home in town to fill behind some rock walls we built in our back yard. Worked like a charm.

Not sure how heavy the load of sand was but the sand was wet. It was 5 bucket loads from the 6' bucket on my tractor. It felt heavy but towed fine as it seemed to balance out very well. The box was about 3/4 full. I could have made the box bigger by extending it farther to the front but the 2x6 side panels are heavy as is and about all that one person can handle alone.

Of course the big drawback in all this was that I had to unload it by hand once I got it home. I've got a big garden wagon and got it unloaded with about 10 loads of the wagon.

Just thought I'd share in case anyone else might get some extra use out of their trailer

I like the idea. Thinking of doing the same with trailer that has 24" PT 2x4 sides that I use for my BX2230. I would load material to the front of the trailer and load the tractor on the rear and try to balance it all out.

Did you cover the sand when traveling? Michigan requires tarping material. Also is there a jack leg for the front of the trailer? Just wondering. Jon

I did not cover it. It was very wet. None blew out. I'm not sure what the law is here in SC but I was prepared to cover it with a tarp if it had been dry. I did not go on the interstate at all.

The jack is detachable. In the picture you can see it sitting on the front of the trailer deck.

Anyone know how to estimate the weight of sand? Are there tables that estimate it based on wet or dry? I don't think this load weighed as much as my car (3200#) but it seemed close.

Might be justification to buy a second tractor.

From someone on yahoo answers:
Best Answer: damp sand weighs 3240 lbs. per cubic yard
dry sand will weigh 2700 ibs. per cubic yard
wet packed weighs 3510 lbs. per cubic yard
damp sand is usually moist to the touch, sand can look dry, if you pick up a handful and water drips from it , it will be wet packed. Moisture is going to determine amount of sand to price. You will get more sand the drier it is.

I did find another answer for dry sand at 100 per cubic foot. Jon

Howling-I would love to have a little B series tractor at my house............but that'll never happen. ;-)

Jon, thanks for those numbers. This sand was very wet packed, water running out of it. I got it out of a creek bed and it got rained on. Now I just need to do the math to figure how much I had on the trailer. Thanks again.

Okay, by my math I had about 4500 pounds on there. I'd save give or take 500 pounds. So more than my car, but it was mostly over the trailer axles and slightly forward of them so it balanced and towed very well. I could get about 25% more sand in the box if I load it to the top of the rails. This would be over 5000 pounds and pushing the limits of my truck and close to the limits of the trailer. I think as long as the sand is drier (it will never be completely dry since it comes from a creek bed) and I keep it below the rails I will be fine.

I probably only need one more load at the most anyway.

There is a tarping law in SC. I still remember all of the homemade tarping rollers that turned up on the big trucks when it went into effect. I'm thinking it was in the 80's.

Good to know. I did put tie down hooks along the side rails. I'll probably be picking up a load of mulch soon so a tarp would help keep that in the trailer too.
