Poison......drowning..... I don't agree with either of those methods, at least in my world here. If your going to take something out....take it out... Period. As said before, live trap 'em and take them to the release point THEN shoot them.

You make it sound pretty simple yet it isn't. I find every ones ideas interesting.
I didn't realize they carried disease. It took me two winters to get two coons out of my attic. I'd have worked on it a bit harder had I known that.

Raccoons have always been a problem here but this year there has been a population explosion. Since the weather has warmed, I have trapped (and dispatched) a total of 19 to date.
My neighbors are having similar a harvest. Since raccoons breed like rats, no telling how many of those filthy critters would be raiding our sweet corn or pooping on our new hay
I'm wondering if last winters milder temps might have contributed to the rise in population?

Raccoons are around here as well but don't cause any problems. This one guy was so friendly I wouldn't be surprised if he was hand raised by humans somewhere. He'd visit us fairly often over the course of 2 years and then all of a sudden we didn't ever see him again. Hope his passing was quick and painless, not poisoned, drowned, or tortured by someone's dogs. To each his or her own, I suppose.

I think most critters go through population cycles influenced by the population cycles of higher and lower species in their food chains...as natural predators increase, their prey decreases, then disease enters the picture then the cycle repeats. Kinda a Darwin thing.

I use to know a guy that liked racoons, he raised one up and always talked about how "sweet" it was. I use to tell him it was an EXPENSIVE mistake, but he was a townie with townie ideas...
One day the neighbor girl came over and was petting it, for no reason it bit her... Long story short, the coon was held 10 days then destroyed and he was sued... oooohh, and the DNR wrote him up for all kinds of offences, to the tune of $350.00 bucks too...

And I've had some in the bird feeders that get very aggressive when chased off. They are wild animals.
