Any lubricant for undoing galvanized pipe?

Cut the pipe off as short as you want it, then put new threads on it. Of course, the tool to spin your die will be 1/2" too long to spin it in that spot.

If you see severe corrosion after cutting it, proceed as described above to replace the pipe.

It might provide peace of mind to carefully cut out a square of drywall.

This way you can support the elbow to make your change and then reinsert the drywall with a little fixall...

Yes, I've cut out the drywall so I can wrench on it.

The only reason I started this thread is because I didn't know if there was a "magic lubricant" that would greatly assist in ensuring I did NOT break a pipe. Several times over the years I've had "stuck" things that an application of lubricant, like Kroil, OVER TIME enabled me to disassemble fittings. During the same time I've had mechanics take the "beat on it" approach, costing me weeks of waiting for spare parts and hundreds of extra dollars.

I had a U joint on my F350 that was difficult to get off. The mechanic decided to beat on it with a sledge, then he messed it up so he cut the driveline off with a torch. He KNEW he could get one the next day. It took him two weeks and over $500 just to get the part.

I had difficulty getting a combination of paint and wallpaper paste off the walls. The product I was using said to let sit for four hours, I found it took a full day to work through the thick hardened structure of paste but then it came off well. Often peeling off in large strips. Sometimes the right solvent and enough time can make a job very easy.

I have worked with old pipes since I was three. Not kidding!

Like others said, fluid will not get in there and hence do no good.

Some old fittings, I believe are actually lead.

Some I have actually heated and they still disintegrated or sheared off.

If you don't need a high flow, you could always tap the inside of a cut off 1/2" pipe and put in a smaller fitting and go from there, if you can't work with an outside threading die, or don't want to subject the old piping to that stress.

Nothing wrong with being cautious...

If it breaks then you will be without water until it is repaired.

And just in case you don't know about Internal Pipe Wenches:

Those are neat. But judging by the way I have gouged and crushed pipes using a pipe extension on a pipe wrench, I would imagine the forces could be extreme. Could those things not get jammed up in the pipe?

50 year old pipes.... Learn to hold your backup wrench very still. Any movement and you'll have a leak further up stream. I worked some old pipe many years ago. I ended up replacing about 10 feet of pipe & fittings because I caused several more leaks than the one I was fixing !

Think positive go slow and it will come right out.

they may but I have seen some that were like they were welded, it all depends on the dope used,

Have FUN
