If that is the case . . Could there be a loose key switch or small short in the key switch so that arbitrarily the starter is trigger while its running and that triggers a very sudden resistance and fuse blow.

You got me, I guess it could be a bunch of things. I looked at the back of the dash and wiggled around some wires, saw nothing noticeable. Now its definitely time to call the dealer...!

If you're lucky, MF has already had some other tractors doing this, so they will know what is defective.

You'd have to isolate everything on the schematic for that fuse, and test it, cold, and hot.

I sent an e-mail to the dealer already, and will follow up with a call in the morning. In hind site, I should have tried to give the tractor a little bit of a work out after I replaced the fuse originally. I was really hoping to get some work done this long weekend with the tractor...

Because it is erratic . . It could be a cracked fuse block too. But at this point there is no reason to believe it isn't an easy fix either. It came quickly . . And it could be working by Saturday. If that fuse is for the starter circuit . . What's on that circuit . . Glow plugs ? Dash panel ? Starter ? All tied together by the key switch.

Question: the 1st fuse blown you said was a very fine clean break . . No blow indications. So what about fuse 2 an fuse 3 . . same type of appearance ? Or was it indications of flash blow ?

My point is . . Evaluating details is a key to troubleshooting problems and to often people want to "guess". My career has been about following the clues. So if you tell the dealer the exact clues . . then their service tech can be far better focused and much more likely to find quick success :)

1. Erratic pattern when unit is effected.
2. Always the same fuse.
3. Kills while running
4. Physical Condition of each blown fuse
5. Specific circuit that blows is the circuit controlled by ignition key.
Is there a 6. and a 7. ???

I would check all the grounds. If you have a multimeter, do some testing. Great time to learn how to use one and the tractor at the same time.

I bet you could find the problem pretty quick after a brush up from YouTube on multimeter testing. Remember these are simple electronics and mechanical engines...easy to work on.

I wonder if you've got a wire thats been exposed on that system that's rubbing or getting pinched and shorting out. Given that it's a bigger problem when the tractor is hot it seems I wonder if some rubber wire coating somewhere has been compromised/melted and is grounding out once that coating gets hot and softens up.

Just a theory of course. Good luck

Talked with the dealer. They asked a bunch of information about the operating conditions when the fuse blew. Asked what type of fuel I was running. Said they had a guy running a bio diesel that lead to some sort of problem with the fuel pump, which they said is on the same fuse. Other than that, look for lose wires, chewed or frayed wires, etc. Nothing jumped out at them as a known problem.

Said they had a couple big jobs going on right now, so wouldn't be able to look at it today, so if I can't find anything obvious, I might bring it up Tuesday and leave it for the week.

I'll spend a little more time poking around, and I might do some experiments, like run the tractor for a while parked, just to see if the fuse only blows when the tractor is moving. I can hook up my chipper and take care of the ever growing brush pile. I still think there is a heat related component. Both times, I had been using the tractor for a bit before the fuse blew, but if I tried to replace it, it blew again almost right away.....

Just need to stop by autozone and buy some extra fuses...

If you know what is connected...rather than ripping up the hardness...maybe start at each unit attached. Starter terminals and wires, fuel pump terminals and wires, etc and work back from there. Fuel pump is immediately under your seat on top of the tank I believe so maybe make sure nothing is jumping around on top there crossing a circuit
