Yanmar YM2210D & YM 155D
Hello everyone, I haven't posted in a while. I currently have a 2210d and love it. I am going to get another tractor, I want something a little smaller for different applications. I'm considering the 1700d, 1720d, and 1610d. I know how nice the Powershift is and how helpful it is when using FEL, but need some help deciding which one of these to get, pros and cons from anyone who wants to chime in. I didn't know if anyone has had experience sleeving one of these 3 cyl tractors since they are not an engine that was set up to be sleeved. I know someone has had to have done this before so was inquiring about that as well. These are the 3 I'm looking at because of size and HP, like I said the Poweeshift would be great, but any drawbacks from the gear transmission of the 1700d? Mainly going to be using to clear snow, till small garden, and finish mow with it. Thanks for who ever wants to add their 2 cents worth.

Forgot to mention that I plan on putting turf tires on which ever tractor I get too.

If you really need small then the 1610D. 1720D for its greater HP and weight if the step up in price is ok with you. Its column shift is nice too. Either is a good choice.

1700D would have to be priced about half of a Powershift model before I would consider it. To shift forward/reverse, its non-syncro manual transmission requires a full stop and attention to choosing the right gear, this will be frustrating moving snow where you change direction all the time. Running anything off the PTO keeps the transmission gears spinning when you try to make any shift, either jam it into the intended gear instantly or wait a long wait for the implement to spin down. Those are ok if your application is moving along at a steady pace, not so well suited to any close-quarters application.

My own experience is I prefer using the YM186D with Powershift because it is a lot more productive, and pleasanter with the smooth 3-cylinder engine, and only get on the YM240 (YM2000) when I have to, which is rarely. That one is mostly retired to occasional backhoe use. (YM1700 is basically YM2000 less some features, operation would be identical).

And - I would thoroughly research turf tires if that is what you want. It might be hard to find the correct front/back diameter ratio for any of those Yanmars. And sure to be expensive.

Thanks California. I was wondering how much of a pain in the butt it would be when stopping and putting into reverse and forward when clearing snow.

It is hard trying to keep implements moving with the non PS models when changing gears (takes a few edges off some teeth!). For this most definitely get a power shift model.

Thanks Neat! Yeah I'm sure a few teeth have been ground before by other owners who have a gear tranny. How well do you like your 1500 and what do you mainly use it for?

For all the stop and go power shift would be best. But if money is a concern get gears. Just takes more time, but if you use to PS you may hate it. Also turfs and or turfs and rims will be a pretty big price increase over the tractor. But if a man has the means and The want that's all he needs.

Thanks Clemsonfor. I do like my PS but think or hope the gear tranny will be ok for me, at least I hope so. I like the idea of the 1700 being a sleeved engine, and it's a little more compact size wise too. It isn't much cheaper than the other 2 that's the only downfall

Yea I like the idea my ym2000 is sleeved. It's not that large of a tractor. I think the 1700 is the same frame size...??? Other experts here? It's just smaller engine may have same size cylinders but not sure, maybe that's the 1900?

From what I've read YM1700 is just the simple version of YM2000. No water pump, smaller tires, smaller bore sleeve. But today only YM2000 sleeves/pistons are available for overhaul and they fit like they were made for it.

Probably different injector pump / governor settings too.

I've never learned if the transmission is identical.

I think YM1900 was just early pre-YM2000, basically same.
