John Deere 650 10.3mph in 8th gear. My brother has one of these with a loader. As tough a tractor as I have seen for the size.

2cyL would work fine for 4wd? My 2wd 2cyl works perfectly fine. And if it took him 20 mins to drive 1/4 mile something was wrong or he was in like 1st gear? My 2cyl ym2000 tops out at 9 miles an hour. Not fast but way faster than what you claim. 9 mph is like 6.5 minute miles or I can go half a mile in just over 3 mins. Something was wrong with his tractor.

I would figure that either he purposely kept the RPMs low to not over work the engine or that something was preventing the JD650 from getting anywhere.

The JD850 is rated for 11.75mph based real stats. My nearly accurate GPS says 16.2mph for the YM2610. The JD850 has 8-gears and mine is PS with 12 forward shift points.

Does your brother has the rear tires fill too? It makes a big difference hauling or moving about. I talked with John, he said before the tires get filled, the little JD650 moves really well. BUT, he needs the liquid to help offset the loader digging out cattle ponds in the drought seasons.

I again do not have a JD650, but I have a ym2000 a 24HP smaller tractor. It should not over work an engine to rev up to the rated RPMs to just drive down a road. its not much load on the engine at all?

I do have my rears filled, as much as the little 9.4x24s can hold which is not that much. I have 175ish pounds hanging off the front bumper and I can go just as fast with the rear finish mower on the back that weighs like 600 pounds. I am just as fast with all that stuff as I am without it all.

I noticed the YM240 worked a lot harder going up grades after I filled the tires with water, and sometimes needed a lower gear. Then after I installed the ROPS I reduced the tire fill to 50%. That now feels about right, no longer sluggish. But that was climbing grades. Ballast weight shouldn't make an difference in top speed on level ground.

I can see why he likes the JD 650. I think my YM186D is similar size except lower because its running on small 16" rear tires. It's surprisingly competent. I just came in for lunch from watering down in the back of the orchard, tugging a 2600 lb watering trailer up and down considerable grades. Not bad for 18hp.

Yes, brother has liquid in tires plus he often hangs weights on the rear plus 4 wheel drive. I am pretty sure it has 16" rear tires, fat little suckers best I remember.

You also have tires that are way bigger than originals on that tractor that hold at least 2x the liquid that my original size tires hold , that probably is some of the effort it took. If I remember right without looking at the chart, the 9.5 x 24 hold around 8 gallons?

Agree, the oversize 11.4 x 24 tires a prior owner put on the YM240 can hold a lot more water ballast. I finally decided filling them to the top of the rims was excessive.
