Ym2000 and ym240: Engine tag 2tr20, 2tr20-A, 2tr20-AX for various years. The only difference I could see is dipstick on opposite side. YM240 parts manual shows updated parts for four update levels, at various engine serial numbers. That's why Hoye needs engine serial # to order parts.

Seating space: the common replacement seat sold by Hoye and everybody crowds you closer to the steering wheel than an original Yanmar seat. My YM240 feels snug with that replacement seat and I'm not very tall, maybe similar to a Japanese farmer. I drilled another pair of holes in the seat brackets to get it back farther, and lower, so I could duck under orchard trees. (Before I bought the ROPS). The original Yanmar seat on the YM186D feels longer front to back than that replacement seat.

In summary - it might be worth it to pay more for a replacement seat that slides back.

Thanks California, that does help. I will keep that in mind when it comes to that time.

Yeah no water pump on mine and it cools fine. I haven't changed the seat on my 1500 but did on the YM14 with one that has the adjuster on it. I find it perfect as my wife occasionally uses it and couldn't reach the pedals before but can now move the seat to suit her. You should have a little room to move it back on a 1700 (if it has a ROPS) and if not you will have tons of room.

That sounds right. Maybe a little "a" on the end?

I won't be back to my house where it is for a few days

I have a ROPS so there is not that much room behind the replacement seat that's ok it now

Found an old photo that might add a little regarding mount/dismount convenience on YM240/YM2000/YM1700:

This was an old-man step I added to the YM240 to get up on it more easily. Somebody put oversize rear tires on the tractor that made it higher and made the entry point narrower. Before this, the floorboard was too high to get my weight on my forward foot so I was mostly pulling myself up on to the tractor with upper body strength, very tiring when I was watering etc and on/off the tractor all day. Recommended!

I like that step California! Great idea, I might have to do something like that in the near future.

but I'm pretty sure I'm gonna get the 1700d, the only reason not to get it would be the PS, all other things lead me to the 1700d.

I had a John Deere 850 (aka Yanmar YM2500) When it ran, it worked great. The down side was the clutch and gear shifting. It was a really BIG PITA mowing with a bush hog as you had to shift, push in the clutch watch the PTO spin down and then hoping that the engine wouldn't bog down too much as you floored the diesel pedal getting the RPMs up. Then once the tractor jerked in 3rd, the PTO would hammer the bush-hog and away you went. HATED that part the most about the gear tractors. AND if you had to back up, well, it's worse.

So, when I went for a replacement engine and found Fredricks, they asked how I would be using the tractor. They then said, the YM2610 is basically the John Deere 850/Yanmar YM2500 with added Powershift. that sold me right then and there. No more clutching to spin down and up the PTO. The PTO is LIVE in that PS selection range. AWESOME.

Now, my co-worker got the YM1720D. It's a 3-cly for good power and torque, 4WD, Power-Shift and Power Steering. All standard Yanmar equipped on the tractor. He upgraded by adding on the FEL. He bush hogs weekly, grades the drive way, and has redone the landscaping at his place all in a matter of weeks since getting the tractor. He would not even consider a 2-cly for 4WD applications.

AND, my neighbor down the road has a John Deere 650 w/FEL It has the 2T80 engine. It's nearly like the YM2010D. It has the 2T90 engine. It took soooooo long for that little Yanmar painted green to even get the simplest jobs done. To lower and raise the FEL because
it was a 2-cly took was seemed way too long to care. John even told me that's how fast it was when he got it new. To drive a 1/4-mile from his place to mine was almost 20mins.

Again, looking at the YM1700D vs. the YM1720D, is almost like night and day.

2cyL would work fine for 4wd? My 2wd 2cyl works perfectly fine. And if it took him 20 mins to drive 1/4 mile something was wrong or he was in like 1st gear? My 2cyl ym2000 tops out at 9 miles an hour. Not fast but way faster than what you claim. 9 mph is like 6.5 minute miles or I can go half a mile in just over 3 mins. Something was wrong with his tractor.
