Ford put like 1.2 billion into the overhaul of F150 line and they are sitting in the best position EPA wise but with the surge in 4x4 due to oil price drop, the fleet meets emissions basically due to their 2wd trucks. The 4x4 miss it by 1MPG and a bit over standard on emissions. GM bashing aluminum is funny because guess who is going to be forced to do the same thing? Nobody is going to survive these regulations ... everyones product is going to suck. What's the 2025 standard ... 54MPG? Yea!

I think I'm just going to build my own perfect truck. 5.9 mechanical in a Ford 4x4 body/chasis and Allison transmission and then keep it forever as these new trucks in the future won't be able to do anything.

I have to agree, what an F150 or anybody's truck might look like in just 8 years, that gets 54mpg. Not going to happen, something has to give, wondering when your everyday Joe will wake up, and demanded EPA be sidelined. Company's that sell lots of cars, like Toyota have a big advantage because their high milage fleet is gigantic. Company's like Ford that get most their revenue from a light truck seem doomed. I'm getting a Land Cruiser with the 5.7 V8, 8100lbs towing is good for my Airstream trailer dreams. I'm tired of American stuff having issues, wish I could get 4.5 diesel in it... HS.

I HATE the EPA. I am all for being sensible and caring for our planet but the vast majority of stuff they come up with is just feel good crap with no real benefit. I am still not convinced these modern diesels with the lower fuel economy due to the DPF etc actually pollute less when you consider the extra fuel consumed.

Yup, the whole VW thing was basically because the standards are about unachievable. And what most people don't realize is it wasn't just them, five others did the same. With gas engines going GDI and particulate filters showing up on them too ... complexity and cost of everything is going up no matter what the fuel type is. As you said, something's going to have to give. I don't see trucks that can do what they do today being able to do the same thing in 2025 and get 54MPG. Nutz!

Even with the 2017 gassers, I think I remember reading that the vehicles with particulate filters were basically air scrubbers ... the particulates coming out of the exhaust were less than what went into the engine to start with!

54 MPG will never happen. It defies the laws of physics.

The big 3 will give the gubmint the middle finger and the reg will be changed.

Not so sure about that. They've capitulated up to this point, why will they change course? I think they may have to go a higher percentage of hybrid trucks to get to the epa numbers.

I would back down to EPA standards and regulations in place in mid 80's, then put them into law directly and dissolve the EPA. HS

Yep, will have to go to batteries. Then we'll see headlines like ... "Pickup truck burst into flames towing boat up mountain".
