It's interesting to hear what "country folk" think of "city folk" behavior and what "city folk" think about "country folk" and their behavior. My experience has been that there are a lot of misconceptions from both groups.

Good point....

"Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God". One is an attitude, the other is a sawed off shotgun.....just sayin'...as I dont' have a sawed off.........just a double barrel....and/or a lot of patience.

When we lived up north, the night sky on a cold winter night looked like diamonds on fire. It was spectacular with the northern lights and all. When I explained to someone in the city that I was tired from being up half the night watching the stars, they were convinced we were kidding. Their loss.

Same blank stare when I said we often watch the Weather Channel for an hour or two at a time.

BAck in the 90s (could have been the 80s) I was working swings, got off one night and I thought there was a wild fire going to the North, Town lies in the bottom of a canyon, my way home takes me up out of the canyon and about 4 miles norht. Got out of the canyon and the entire north sky from horizon to zenith was alight with northern lights. Never seen such a display! Got home and called my neighbors to alert them, one directly across the higheway , one about 1/4 mile north. Told them to turn off their yard lights and enjoy. Both lights went off and about a minute later both were back on. Me and wife sat up till 3am watching it.

Nearest neighbor was a towny, other one country folk.

I bought my property here in '98 as an retirement investment and, as I was still in the Navy, I rented it out. As such, my tenants generally took care of the house & a wee bit of the lawn around it but the rest of it was fallow & overgrown. Which was the same case for a few of my neighbours.

So, when I did retire here, I enthusiastically began to improve "my place". The tractors and the new 5-bay shed, fenced to make 6 internal paddocks for my horses, trimmed all of the trees, (ongoing) elimination of bracken... the place looks great now. My property sign at the front gate proudly says "WAGTAIL PARK".

My neighbours have all started to (mysteriously ) improve/fix-up their own properties...

You can't fix stupid.

I raised my kids in the city so they'd meet all kinds of people, see what drug and alcohol abuse does to a life, learn ocean sailing, and become street smart. We take them up north to spend time in the woods and learn those skills. Easy to do in New England.

Over 80% of Americans live in cities or suburbs. The percentage is going up.

Very true!

I grew up in a heavily wooded neighborhood. We had about 60 large, mature oaks on less than 2 acres. My parents were quite proud of the fact that they only had to cut down 3 trees when they built the house. While it was beautiful, peaceful, serene, cool shade, etc... as a kid, I lived in constant fear anytime there was a thunderstorm. Every year at least one of those huge trees would come crashing down right next to the house. Several people in the neighborhood were actually injured by falling branches and trees while inside their own homes. And several homes were heavily damaged by trees falling on them. Heck, one time on a nice, sunny day, I heard a loud crash and looked over at my grandmother's house next door and there she was, 95+ year old grandma, sitting on a rocker on the porch, looking at a large branch 6' from her, the tip of which was resting on the concrete porch floor with the rest sticking strait up through the roof of the house and extending 30' into the air! I will never, ever, live in a house in the woods again. 24 years of terror was enough. All trees larger than 30' high will be removed back to a distance from the house 1.5 times their height.
You wouldn't fare well outside the towns in the PNW! Lots of 100ft evergreens!

Our farm has a row of rotting pine stumps along the yard... the year before we bought the place, a big storm brought most of them down, narrowly missing the house and previous owner's car... doubt they were 100', but easily 75'. Stumps are 24" to 30".

In PNW? A couple a year usually and normally small enough that there is some doubt about some of them even being tornados. :)

Recently (over the past several years and continueing this year) we have been plagued with wild fires. 16 homes lost just this week from one fire with several other fires still burning.
