We seem to get city folks moving out here to the country that think it is okay to let their little dogs out at night "to go potty" before bed... Seems they all put up "dog missing" posters before long. Coyotes served city dog, all fat and delicious. City folks do not understand they put coyote bait out and the coyotes were glad to have some..

Our little Boston Terrier is trained to stay in our yard (we have one acre plus), but I always go out with her at night. She has no compunction about chasing possums, raccoons, skunks, cats, etc and I certainly don't want her getting into a tussle with any of them, especially a coyote or even a fox.

The big problem I have with city folk is that the move to the country or the suburbs and they treat their home like rental property and it looks like a pig stye. They mow every three months whether it needs it or not, and their whole yard is a compost heap. I guess they like the patina of peeling paint...what you can see of it through the 20 foot high shrubs.

That ain't city folk around here. The trashed houses and yards around here are descendants of large landowners that have a free house (trailer) and a little bit of family land and seemingly no job.

Yeah, now I got one like that across the road. Used to be really nice family there. I call it "White Trash" that live there now.

It's interesting to hear what "country folk" think of "city folk" behavior and what "city folk" think about "country folk" and their behavior. My experience has been that there are a lot of misconceptions from both groups.

We have a newer family just down the road from us we call Ma & Pa Kettle. Got a dozen kids, half of them running around barefoot, and sometimes even no pants. They also have half a dozen of pretty much every farm animal you could think of penned up all over, a pop-up trailer in front of the house, cars and truck parked all over, and a dog chained to every tree in the yard. All crammed onto one acre of property. Everyone around has called the county on them at one point or another, but are always told there's nothing they can do. My wife's aunt and uncle live next to them, and have started planting a pampas grass barrier all along the property line to block the view.

I like our new neighbors across the creek. I'm pretty sure they drive a couple hours from the city to be here on weekends. They put a big dock in the weedy creek and the kids jump in and play. They have a great time. The parents even drift around on floating chairs. They're either so county that they put us to shame, or they've never seen a snapping turtle or dogfish. Either way, they're having fun and are a nice addition to the neighborhood.
As for misconceptions. I coached baseball in a rural area. One game in the adjacent city, the kids came back to the bench and asked me what cow tipping was. Apparently the city kids knew and were curious if we tipped cows. I explained it to our team, and confirmed that yes, I had seen it done.

My wife would kill me if she knew I was spreading this.
When we decided to move to "the country" I told her we would be on "well water". So in her mind, she pictured a little stone wall well and a bucket on a rope. She was willing to move and didn't say a thing. I didn't know this was her thinking until after we had moved in. She was so glad to find out how the well actually worked. Being raised in SLC her whole life and moving to the country; well, lets just say she ain't going back to the city. I think she enjoys feeding the cows more than me. :)
Like me, she would like to get more land/cows when I retire.

When I was about 10, we moved back to the States from Germany. We visited my aunt and uncle in NW Ohio and at some point it came up that they were on a well. I had the same perception and was really excited when my uncle said he'd be happy to show me the well. I was pretty disappointed to see that 8" metal tube sticking up out of the ground.

When they were drilling our well my wife ask how we get a bucket down that little pipe. I thought she was kidding. Little did I know. I finally understood her confusion when she ask how often a water truck would have to come and fill up our well. I explained the whole well/pump/pressure tank to her.

It does take a guest a couple of days to get used to the idea that the house isn't locked at night, and that it's so darned quiet... and dark! They're usually 'cured' the first time they see the Milky Way on a clear, moonless night. :)

When we lived up north, the night sky on a cold winter night looked like diamonds on fire. It was spectacular with the northern lights and all. When I explained to someone in the city that I was tired from being up half the night watching the stars, they were convinced we were kidding. Their loss.

Same blank stare when I said we often watch the Weather Channel for an hour or two at a time.
