Why do people think it's okay to call/text late?

I think your right, but I also think you should be more prudent when sharing your phone number.
You can create email addresses at dozens of different websites. This will allow your potential customers to contact you and not wake you up.
Give someone an opportunity to be an idiot and some will certainly take advantage. All it takes is one or two.

Agreed...

But isn't the point of these message boards to give a place every to vent about things that p!$$ us off? I completely agree that in this day and age, we have to tolerate more and more inconsiderate people, but that doesn't make those inconsiderate actions 'right'.

No!

That's not the point!

If you have an iPhone or Android there is a privacy setting where you can limit incoming calls to certain hours and/or allow specific numbers to have 24/7 access. Only way to deal with unwanted or wrong numbers after hours without just shutting off your phone.

Thanks Beltzington, I found the privacy setting on the iPhone and it allows favorites to get through (my elderly parents if they have and emergency) but will bloc fire alerts from the app from surrounding agencies when I'm sleeping. My old pager from just my VFD will sound at night to wake me.

After reading thru the thread I have to say that I agree with it being rude to call non-family after 9:00pm but I think a text or email should be okay anytime. You can silence the notifications of newly received texts or email and access them later at your leisure. And if you are truly sensitive about this and want to keep your phone features enabled then its rude of you to leave it on when you turn in.

Precisely my point.

Regardless of weather someone thinks its okay to call/text at midnight or not, I think it is inconsiderate. Thus I am venting on here.

ITs not always just texts, and its not always about the services I offer. I have gotten phone calls at 11:00 PM and later before.

If I could turn off my text alerts I would. But as I said....I am literally on call 24/7. Not only for work, but for my appts. 9 times out of 10, any issues at work or at the appts, I get via text. Trying to help someone get a piece of noisy machinery back up and running, in a noisy environment.....is a whole lot easier via text than over the phone where neither party can hear well.

Sure, I can get another line for my craigslist stuff, and may very well look into that. But just because I dont have a second line.....doesnt somehow make it my fault that some idiot wants to call me at midnight......as the tone it seems some are taking here. Almost like backing into someone in a parking lot and blaming them because because if they hadn't parked there you wouldnt have hit them:laughing:

So in summary, yes, there are things I can do to not be annoyed by late night idiots. But just because I havent implemented any of those preventative measures yet....doesnt make them any less of an idiot or any less at fault.

Just put all your work numbers on favorites and they can call even when you put your phone on "Do not disturb" in settings. Technology has found a way to address those rude people if you learn how to utilize it.

I sold a lot on CL and never give out the phone number. Buyers use the e-mail option provided so I can call them back after I check my e-mail at my convenience. Then they either give me their number or I e-mail back and get their phone number. Never had a problem with CL untimely calls.

The issue is the mass number of people I could potentially get a call from. Far more people than I want to put in my contact list.

All I am saying is it shouldn't come to that. I should not have to set up another line, because some moron decided to text at midnight....then get all pi$$y and act like it was my fault.

Who is a bigger moron, the person who texts late at night or the person who responds late at night?:D

Ultimately if your business is relying upon phone calls coming in, I'd take everyone of them time permitting. However, you do have the option to "train" your customers. Depending on what type of work you do, there are reasonable expectations of at least a return phone call per business. I think it's unreasonable in your line of advertised work that you would actually respond to a text late at night. I would however expect you to return my message the following day. That said, I personally wouldn't text a business I didn't know that late at night.

That said, I still don't get the fact that some businesses advertise in the yellow pages and you give them a call, and you NEVER get a return phone call. Makes no sense to me why you'd advertise a business number and never get back to a potential customer. Had a roofer call me 4 months after I called his business. He actually sounded surprised that I had someone actually do the work.
