Too bad you didn't live up here. You can find those tanks cheap (or even free) quite often as people convert from heating oil to natural gas.

Yep. I got one just a while ago for free, to use the steel for a project. It came with 105 gallons of nice #2 diesel, which I'm burning in my tractor.

All free. I plan to get two more to make into an outdoor stove to burn my fall leaves and the usual accumulation of branches and twigs. I don't expect to pay a dime.

Check your local Craigslist.

Why is that? I've been there and I believe it, but heating oil is non existent here. Here people use natural gas or wood. The unfortunate ones use electric or propane. The stupid ones use kerosene heaters.

New England is old school. Many people used coal to heat, and they were easily converted to oil burners. Natural gas is gaining popularity, but it requires pipelines for delivery, and New Englanders are death against pipelines. I guess they prefer barges filled with oil on their oceans and rivers! Propane is also gaining, gives natural gas performance without the pipeline requirement. I'd consider switching to natural gas, but it'll be 20 years before we get pipes in my area. Plus the part of houses blowing up every now and then makes me content with oil!

They would work fine and easily moved with forks. I was going to buy one but already had the 275 gal. tanks.

You wouldn't want to leave it exposed to the sun. The UV rays will break down the plastic in time.

That's what I've been using for the last 10 years or so.

But I keep it in the polebarn out of the sun.

Are you using these for diesel? Will they deliver diesel to these totes?

That surprises me... I don't know why... I guess they just don't seem 'secure' enough for several hundred gallons of diesel. Although, I see them toting all sorts of hazardous chemicals all over the place, so I guess, there really is no difference.

My local delivery guy has a 200 gal minimum though I bet 150+ would do. Since diesel lasts two years easily with some fuel additives, are you sure you don't want bigger tanks to take advantage of bulk buying? 25 gal a day is pretty fair consumption and the delivery folks aren't always available immediately. I'd consider more capacity, however you tank it.

I ran into the same issue with my diesel fuel tank where at the 300 gal range, the authorities have zero regulations. Just use common sense I was told...no dikes or double walls needed until over a thousand gallons. Assuming they had been cleaned out to make sure there wasn't accumulated guck at the bottom, I think home fuel tanks would do fine. After all, it's the same fuel with a variety of names.

btw, my entire system installed with auto nozzle and US made DC pump was under $1k. Tank was built here in Goldsboro NC. If you are going to go through a lot of work plumbing/fabricating
hand me down tanks, would keep that cost in mind as a reference.
