As much as I love the control these inverter welders have over the puddle. A lot can be said for old equipment.
Here is what a 1937 Idealarc 300 can do with 6010, and 7018.

Beautiful welds!

I made a weld that looked just like the weld in your fourth pic, back in 1997 or 1998. Beautiful weld, I was fiberglassed how beautiful it was, it was gorgeous! Haven't made one like that since..... :)

You remind me of that guy in that space documentary a couple years ago. Nothing went over his head; his reflexes were so fast, he would catch it!

Not a clue what you are talking about. I miss lots of things. I have had old style transformer machines and they work well. SO FAR my inverters have worked well. If they require repair it will be ugly. Not so on an old transformer.. And they will likely never require repair with light usage. That was my point. And with a tractor a heavy transformer machine becomes quite portable, if you want to make it so. Based on what I saw, the OP asked about he wanted simple, reliable. Thus my advice. Feel free to ignore...

Read it again and tell me you can't see the joke:

Between the weight, the power consumption and the obsolescence of these old Lincoln dinosaurs, I hate to say it and I know someone here will probably give me heck for it, but those lesbian bi-gay transistors that Mark sells are starting to look pretty good.....

I appreciate your input, I do. I'm sorry my attempt at humor is too subtle.

Never seen the movie, so no way to know what the reference was - sorry! I have heard it was a really good movie, though, and I plan to see it someday...

Perhaps some visuals will help:

Here's a couple of my tried and true, - ol' reliable "trannies"

And a pic of a modern "LGBT" inverter with a highly recommended "tunes to weld by" CD.

Big barn not sure which welder to pick- ( nice welders by the way) but will pick Escape as a great song...

I do think there is a big difference in the build quality and toughness of the old industrial welders.
jmo but little doubt that these old transformer machines will outlive many of the new inverters. my :2cents:

In the middle of the first pic, there was one of those for sale on the local CL. It was $450 IRC but it was "parts only", so obviously, they didn't know if it worked. It was too far away to chance it (3 hours one way).

Doing daily searches on "welder", Lincoln" and "Idealarc".
