Chuckle. When I read the tread title I assumed you were speaking of a CUT and thought- no way 40'... With a tool like yours clearing my property for a new home build would have been far easier and safer. But I still wonder about the safety aspect of falling limbs and recall the many issues I had doing the same on MUCH smaller live trees and the associated caveats. I did take down a few oaks that were alive and larger than the size of your pics using chainsaw and tractor with winch. Brings back memories of danger and how lucky I was.

Nice setup  safe way I seen in long time to take nasty tree down by one man.

Just so new tractor owners are clear here, what a person can safely do with a
Telehandler and what a person can safely do with a normal CUT tractor are two different things.

Good point, James. He probably didn't notice what forum this is in.

I didn't want to drag it down the driveway, so it laid there long enough to show in the satellite view.

I added a smaller tree to it, picked them up, dropped them over the fence and put them on a brush pile that I made for my neighbor.

To show you what a small CUT can do, in the video I remove a ~50 foot tree with a 19 hp CUT. Of course, this tree is much lighter than the OP's tree, only maybe 10 inch diameter at the bottom.

Two caveats:

1. Keep in mind this CUT has one heck of a strong FOPS. I've had trees this size fall directly on top of it and do nothing but scuff the paint. I would never do forest work without a FOPS.
2. This 19 hp CUT weighs 5,000 pounds as it sits. Might not be able to do the same thing with any 19 hp tractor made today as they are much lighter.

I've pushed over 14" diameter 60 foot trees with a 45 hp 7,000 pound tractor after breaking surface roots on one side with a stump bucket. (Also has a beefy FOPS). But never anything close to the girth of the OP's tree.

I used to to have a FOPS (Falling Object Protection System) on an old Utility tractor, and I could walk around on it. I would not try that on my nice little sunshade canopy on my current tractor, and while it is steel, I sure would not want to drop a tree down on it.

Yea, I wouldn't want to drop a tree on a sun shade either! Especially not with me in the seat!!

I once dropped the beginnings of my zip line tower on the FOPS. I was using the tractor to steady the base. Not a big deal. The FOPS was designed to take far more than that. It just scuffed the paint didn't even go through the primer. The reaction in the second picture was staged.

I think that half of the stuff I do needs to come with some sort of disclaimer so that people closer to the center of the bell curve don't try it. ;)

Good way to get killed. I was hoping to see something entirely different. Many people have been badly injured and killed doing just this. Push on the tree top breaks out falls on operator. NOT SMART!!!!!!!
