Chained Tractor down for first time. Assess and Critique please.

I have two new 20 foot 3/8" G70 chains. I plan to cut each in half and put a slip hook on the other end. Two slip hooks on the clevis at rear with one chain going to a stake pocket on each side and a ratchet binder on each.

Same for the front just with the slip hooks attached to axle straps

Very close to how I do it. The only difference is I have grab hooks on 2 of the short chains. Those hook right onto the brush guard frame, right at the corners where you have the front chain running through. Perfect fit. I'm not the type to worry about a little paint scratch down there, and they don't do much damage to it in any case... I like the ratchet binders too. Easy to use. The lever style looks harder to use and asking for an injury, IMO.

You're in good shape and I wouldn't worry too much about it, as long as you secure the implements for longer trips, especially.

The lever binders are a lot faster and IMO easier. You need a cheater pipe to fully utilize them.

I saw a small road roller on a trailer a few days ago. It was tied down very well, but each of the 4 chains had to be wrapped around the frame and hooked back on itself. Why don't equipment manufacturers build in tie down points? It would be so much easier to do good transport chaining then.

I think its pretty cool that someone would post photos of their set up, ask for feedback, and adjust what they're doing. Lots of people are too proud to learn, hesitant to ask for help, or whatever.

I am a subject matter expert in a number of areas due to training and experience. As a Senior NCO in the Army, I learned long ago the best course of action is to consult those that know more than you in an area where you are not a SME

Nice job. I use chain saw bar oil to keep the binders lubed, seems to last the longest of the oils for lubrication

I keep noticing people talking about using pipe or such to extend the handles of chain binders. This works ok for tightening the binders but are very dangerous or just unusable for undoing the binders. Using your hand to undo them is fine most of the time if great care is taken to not grip the handle of the binder. Instead making sure to only use the palm of your hand. Binders can come under great strain due to movement of the load and at times when they come open it is with amazing force. Easy to get hurt. I learned about and started using a bar made to be used on binders and on large strap turn buckles. The small end is used to tighten and loosen the large strap rachets on the side of trailors. This bar is so much safer to undo binders. It allows the handle of the chain binder to swing free from the extender and also allows you to stand back a bit from the load in case it tries to shift and hit you when opening the binder. Post and pipe is really bad about this, lumber at times.

That's a nifty tool. I've seen the pointy end bars for tightening the ratchet straps but never the lever binder end. Did you purchase it or make it yourself? Does it have an official name? (for searching on the web)

Get them in just about any Truck Stop. Best money you will ever spend, may save you from a bad accident as well.
