Got a Kubota MX5800 and wood chipper with 220lb flywheel. The tractor doesn't have a clutch and there is a knob to twist to turn the PTO on and push to turn it off. To turn shut the chipper down, is it OK to just shut the PTO off with the chipper going at rated RPM or gradually slow the engine down to idle and then turn the PTO off?

I would never shut a PTO off at full rpm unless it was on a tractor with a clutch. Especially with a flywheel like that I would idle down to a dead idle then do it.

Most newer Kubotas have a PTO brake that actuates when you turn the PTO off, you will severely shorten the life of the pads if you shut a chipper down that size from rated speed.

OK. Thanks for the great advice.

My M6040 is hydraulic shuttle and has a clutch pedal. I never use the clutch when engaging/disengaging the chipper. From a dead idle, I move the PTO engagement lever and either engage or disengage the chipper. Even at dead idle, I feather the the PTO lever to get the flywheel/rotor spinning. My chipper has a 200# rotor and I would imagine this would cause unnecessary torque issues if done from higher rpms.

I can't , for the life of me, understand why some, if not most, have this feature. Even my little J D lawn tractor has this type of PTO engagement; even at a low idle the engagement is quite harsh, as is the dis-engagement. Perhaps, like automotive maintenance schedules, it's provides the dealer a steady income?

I do like the farmers do. Have you ever seen/heard of a farmer that engages the separator on a combine at full engine RPM? Neither have I. I engage the PTO at idle or a little above, then when shutting down, I slow the engine to idle speed to decelerate the driven equipment, then disengage. I believe it is a good practice no matter what piece of equipment I'm operating. Including the lawn tractor mowing deck.

My chipper has an over-running clutch so that when the PTO stops the flywheel still spins. There is no reason to slow the engine before turning the PTO off.

What good is the over-running clutch for engagement purposes, or am I missing something?
